My brother picked up a lifted Cherokee a few weeks back instead of buying snow tires for his Jetta.  Among other things, the pinion bearings were shot and there was a good howl coming from the rear end on deceleration.   After opening it up and pulling the shafts we realized the carrier would not come out easily, tried a pry bar and running a rag through the gears and it wouldn't budge.Time to make a case spreader.I scrounged up some 1/4" steel, all thread and coupling nuts and started the layout with the gasket.Forgot to get a few pics here in the middle...I laid everything out when the sheet was still one piece to keep it all aligned then cut the center out with O/A torches and a cutoff wheel. The full length coupling nuts are drilled out to 7/16 to remove 2/3 of the threads, a small piece of all thread was screwed in through the back and welded.  These will locate the threaded rod and give it a place to press against. Not sure if the coupling nuts the hardware store had were junk or if the rod was only supposed to go half way through on purpose.  They worked fine when I just used half.  Also welded a nut to the center of the all thread.Action shot, greased up the threads and it worked like a charm.I was doing my cutting and welding in the snow, I didn't have any safe areas to weld or cut inside.  We had to do some work to get the Cherokee in the garage in the before we could even work on it.
Reply:hell yeah. buddy. That will work just fine.
Reply:Nice. You should add this to the homemade tools thread.
Reply:That's an interesting design; I sort of like it.    D44's are sort of borderline on needing a case spreader; rubber BFH to install carrier.     The axle was probably re-geared with out regard to proper carrier and pinion pre-load.  On the bright side; it's a Jeep.    Fix that sucker and wheel it like you stole it!.

Reply:Loose pinion nut....   Like my grand-mother used to say..." never ever reuse a pinion nut!" . Clayton arm's are the best.   Are you keeping the lunch box?It sounds like you guys are going to have some real fun wheeling. Attached Images
