Machine to cut 1/4" - 1/2" 316 threaded rod

Where I work we buy a lot of  threaded rod cut to various lengths.  What type of machine is used to do this?  I have tried searching the web, but must not know the right key words.Thanks
Reply:Probably a chop saw or band saw.  Both will leave a bit of bur (chop saw is worse) that will have to be cleaned up before the nut can be run on.Get it hot and hit it hard...

Reply:I cut stainless every day- 3/8" to 1 1/4" round on the current project, about 3 tons of it in the last year. We use a cheap Jet 4x6 horizontal bandsaw, but spend the money for good quality bimetal bandsaw blades- either lennox or starrett from MSC.  These blades run about 22 bucks each, but last a couple of weeks of cutting- hundreds of pieces each. The bandsaw leaves much less burr than a chop saw, plus it is quieter, and doesnt spew hot grit all over the room. Plus, on big pieces, it will run unattended and turn itself off when its done. But I do tend to touch up ends on a 12" disc sander if they are not getting welded or forged, and you would want to do that on allthread, so the nuts would fit on.
Reply:Tend to use a band saw. Set up the stop for repetative cuts. Light, quick dress on the lead end of the thread with belt sander. For precision rod (high fit class threads) run some nuts up it (a fit or two loose) to grab in the vise. Protects the threads. Also useful when chucking threaded ends in a lathe. Rod coupling nuts work well, as they are long, but  custom cut nuts are needed when you need to run dead true, as commercial nuts generally arn't quite true.
