I recently purchased a Maxstar 150 STL for a steal of a deal with stick leads, tig torch and full bottle of argon. This thing welds sweet! Now I've bought a 330ab/p and don't really need this little maxstar and I'm wanting to find me a 200 amp mig welder now. Problem is I need to sell a welder to get the money. I got a hobart handler 140 mig and I'm debating on selling it or the maxstar. I do a few welding jobs on the side when I can get them, I've got a Hobart 250 welder generator. I was thinking if I'm doing a small job and got a plug in to work with I could just load the maxstar up or the hobart with flux core. I'm just concerned about the maxstar holding up over time. Just looking for opinions I'm leaning more and more towards getting rid of the hobart.
Reply:I've had my maxstar for about 8 years now and it's never had a problem. I do lots of stainless in the field so I can't be without it. Do you plan on doing tig welding in the field? If so keep it, if not sell it.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:They are worth there weight in gold when you gotta go portable, I would keep it, and figure out something else. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:That little Maxstar with stick will do heavier material than that Hobart will do with FC wire. Switch to tig and it can probably do anything on the thin side that Hobart can do with mixed gas and solid wire. I'm a big mig fan, but I'd take the Maxstar over that little Hobart if I could only have one machine. A 110v mig is just too limiting..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks for the info, I believe I'll go ahead and keep it, I've had the Hobart for years and seldom ever take it anywhere. I think keeping the max star would be the best decision seeing everybody's positive input on it. Thanks
Reply:I don't think you will find many here that would say sell the maxstar. Once you have it you really don't want to let it go. The only reason you post this here and at millers is to CONFIRM thatYOU want to keep it ! Here's the Hobart site. Would be interesting to see what the Hobart guys say.http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtalk/

Reply:If there is a large profit to be made, then I'd say sell it and the 140 mig and get the larger mig. I sold my maxstar 150 a few years ago and replaced with a larger mig. However, I ended up purchasing a new esab 150 stick/tig, shortly after I purchased my mig. I wouldn't miss the small stick if I didn't need to be portable. 200 amp mig are pretty small these days, not so inconvenient to carry around, occasionally.
Reply:Confirms it. I've been threatening to get rid of the Hobart for a long time being I max the duty cycle out and trip my breaker a lot with it. It was just if I sold the maxstar I would have the money to get a nicer mig being I could sell it for $300 more than what I can sell the hobart far if not more than that and I'll be losing money on the hobart where I'd be making money on the miller. Seeing how well everybody loves the maxstar and how well it welds and easier portability I see my best decision is to keep it.
Reply:If you decide to unload the Maxstar 150, I want dibs. I sold mine a few years back, and after much thought about it......... it was a mistake. I am looking for another one.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return. |
