It's a Hobart 120 running .030 wire. I usually weld on #2 or #3 voltage setting and recently whrn welding there are times when it will start melting all the wire between the puddle and the tip instead of a having a sizzle as it just burns off the tip of the wire. When this happens, there is a short pause while it runs enough wire out to touch the metal being welded and then it melts all the wire between the metal and the tip again. Needless to say, the weld bead is a real mess.Any ideas on what could cause this?  I've run wire through the sleve while holding on to the wire to see if the rollers are slipping but it rolls out the wire fine. No changes have been made to the welder.
Reply:Sounds like the wire feed is too slow. One possibility is that you have a damaged liner in the gun. Held a certain way the kink in the liner slows down your wire enough to cause issues. Sharp bends in the gun lead can cause the same issues. Try and get the lead as straight as possible and see if that helps. Also pay  attention to se if this occurs when you have the gun lead laid out a certain way. It doesn't take much to kink a liner in the gun if you aren't careful. If you pull the liner out of the gun a kink is usually very visible. If you see a marked change in direction when you lay the liner out straight, you have a kinked liner..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I have had this happen a little and found a couple things that cause it for me.Like mentioned a bad ground either the clamp or the metal it is on.Kinked hose slowing the wire.Dirty/rusty weld area.Holding the gun to far away from the work (tip should be around 1/4" from puddle)to slow of wire feed like mentioned. And finally bad gun angle to work (to much angle)  Maybe possible worn/bad contact tip in the gun as well.I am no MIG pro, just some things I have saw and went threw.
Reply:Sounds like almost the same problem i had the other day.  I changed the tip and everything went back to normal. Just a thought?
