premade rod holder modification

A guy in Alabama makes these, problem is he only puts plastic rod holders on them and charges a fortune for them. Customer was unhappy with the plastic so he brought it to me. Attached Images

Reply:Oh Man,..  I think you're asking for trouble.I like the Metal Work and personally I think you did a GREAT Job, but I would have gone with something other than 'Just Metal' for storing and holding rods in position and / or when trolling. The Metal 'holder' VS the plastic is a no-brainer, but not for the 'entry' or 'top' part of the rod holder and certainly not without a 'flare' for the front holders.  My guess is that he's going to be one 'Un-Happy' camper when he see's how quickly his rods and reels get chewed up!Remember too that most guys don't fish alone, so when a couple die-hard guys go fishing those rod holder are going to be pretty full and a LOTTA' cash will be sitting in those rod holders.  The vibration and bouncing around from sun-up to sun-down will hurt em' pretty bad and If the rods have short or thin butts, such as on a medium sized Spinning or Bait casting reels, the rear of the bodies and cork handles will be damaged in Short Order.  I've owned my share of boats (with Rod Holders) and I will tell you that even a 'moderately windy day' of fishing will make rods jump and twist in ANY rod holder.  Honestly, it's the reason that most holders are made out of, or have some type of plastic or rubber so it can absorb some of the shock and movement...I would seriously suggest a rubber or plastic coating or insert for the outer-most part of ALL of the holders.Cheers,Last edited by jman; 01-12-2013 at 04:48 AM.Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:That is the weld that you are seeing not anything from a cutting torch. I could have removed the weld and had a smooth opening, but I thought th weld looked neat. This is just a rod holder for the back of your truck. And the bottoms of the rod holder's have pins so the bottom of the reals will never touch the metal, just the rubber handle. Rod are not stored in these, just used for transporting from the house to the boat. I as well do put rubber caps on the holders, some customers want then and some don't.
