I am shopping for a plasma cutter for home use and have narrowed it down to two options: the Hypertherm Powermax30 XP and the Miller Spectrum 625 X-TREME.Based on other forum posts I have read, I am under the impression that Hypertherm makes a superior quality machine, but lacks the upper-end power of the 625.  If this were a choice between the 30 XP and the 375, my decision would be simple.  I would purchase the Hypertherm. My question is, as a hobbyist who only plans to buy only one plasma cutter, should I prioritize Hypertherm's reputation for design and build quality or Miller's higher power offering in the hopes I will not be limited by its capacity in the future?I am aware there are many fine plasma cutters on the market from a variety of manufacturers, but at this point I have narrowed it down to these two and no longer wish to consider others.  Thank you for your input.-Matt
Reply:Of the two, I would go for the Hypertherm.
Reply:High praise from someone who has a Miller welders icon in their profile.   Thank you very much for your input.
Reply:Why not get the Powermax45? It's a much better comparison to the Miller 625 and about the same price. Apples to Apples comparison's make decisions easier. I would recommend the PM45, hypertherm has been THE company for plasma cutters for a while in terms of machine quality and cut quality.

Reply:Don't forget though....that the Miller unit is limited on output power when running on 120 volts. When running the 30XP on 120 volts you will have slightly more power than the Miller, and at a much lower purchase price and with much longer consumable life. The Hypertherm also has Finecut consumables for cutting with a much more focused, narrow kerf. The 30XP comes with a heavy duty carrying case. If you need the extra power on 240 volts....and you need dual voltage, the Miller may be the best choice. If you want the biggest bang for the buck, the best performance on 120 Volts, the lowest operating cost and the best cut quality....the Hypertherm is the best choice.Good luck with your decision!Jim Colt   Hypertherm Originally Posted by talllogicThe Powermax45 will not run on 120 volt power.  Since I am not always working in my workshop where 240 volt power is available, that is an important feature for my purposes.

Reply:Keep in mind HT considers cut capacity min of 10 inches per min.  Because there is no legal standard, some companies can rate their machines higher because they are using 2" per min for example.   Which HT would call this sever capacity.     Also kilowatts are what cuts, not amps.  Really you need to knot the kilowatt capacity of your welder.   My ESAB is around 68k watts I thinkSent from my SCH-I545 using TapatalkTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Hypertherm definitely underrates their machines cutting capacity.   I've cut 1-1/4" bar with my PM45, fairly cleanly too.I had a Miller 375 spectrum before.  I've only compared to the PM45, not the 30, but there's no comparison.
Reply:I have a 625 and used to have a 375.  I will be the first to admit that if I had to do it all over again, I'd choose Hyoertherm.  Why?????   Well,,,,,,ummmm,,,,,  I really don't know why, now that ya mention it.   The 375 and 625 have been outstanding performers.  I guess I'm just saying I'd go with the PM45 because that's what the crowd says. Baaahahaha... I'm a sheep!!!    I'm sure that comparing the Pm45 to a 625 would be like Ford vs. Chevy.  They both perform and both are backed by solid established companies.   Both have consumables that are easy to find on the web.  In fact, my LWS carries Miller 375 and 625 consumables on the shelf, but not Hypertherm.   Both company consumables can be easily found on the internet, so it doesn't matter.  The consensus here on WW is that HT is better than Miller, just because more people here read all the rave reviews about HT cutters.  Also, Jim Colt (Hyperterm rep) is here and promotes his great product.  Does that mean Millers suck?  I don't think so.   I can pull a tree stump out with a Ford F-250 Diesel or a Chevy 2500HD Diesel.  I can also cut 1/2" plate with a Hypertherm PM45 or a Miller 625.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:I have the older 625 and have used the new PM45.Its a huge difference. The PM45 will cut way cleaner with what I would consider a worn out tip and electrode than what my miller will cut with a brand new electrode and tip. Unless you use one you wont believe the difference. I didnt believe it till I saw for my self.I have not had a chance to compare my old 625 to the new one but I am hearing that there isnt much difference. But what do you expect, a new 2014 milller extreme costs the same as my 2004 miller spectrum. Sounds normal right? The number of dollars is the same but the dollars buying power is 25% to 30% less 10 years later thanks to our wonderful government. So to me the new 625 extreme is 2/3 the machine that the old one was.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
