Hobart 140

I am looking to start MIG welding and am looking at getting the Hobart 140.  I need to handle probably up to 1/8 or even 3/32.  If it gets any bigger then that I will be using my arc welder which seems to handle everything bigger then that I need.  I am curious to how well this will be able to suit me needs.  I am really liking the idea of it being able to plug into 110 for portability issue.  As allot of my projects are done in conjunction with friends at various garages.Thanks for you helpDavid
Reply:DavidThe HH 140 is a good portable machine. It will do 1/8 in GMAW, but that will be maxxing it out. Some even think that the 1/8 weld is too cold to be a critical one. 1/8 should not be a problem with flux core. I have done 3/16 a lot with my MM 135 and flux core. No problems, and some are high impact welds. Not critical, but they get a whompin about 10-15 times a day. No crackage or breaks after a year. You should do ok with the 140 IMO. Just don't do anything critical.
Reply:Dave,You can weld .125 with the HH140 with carefull attention to fitup and joint prep.  I built my welding table with my MM135, and there is a mix of .125 (frame), .250 (front angle and cutting table), and .375 (top) steel.Hank
Reply:Dave, the machine will weld anything you want it to...I tested it for six months prior to marketing...it will weld 1/2" fine...the key here is not the machine, but skill level. One rule of thumb I like is "If you KNOW you can weld it, then do it."  This is where experience comes in.   that HH140 is a great machine.
