Reply:really? wow.Ok, well, how did you attach the pictures? Were they too large? You might have to resize them to attach them. I can assist you with posting pics. Reply:Backing plate 1/8 rod. Thanx. Yeah its 1 in cut into 3/8 strips bent on the side. Oh and the plates were 4x4 and the gap at the route opening is 1/4 inch43 is good. There were a lot of guys that failed for going over 50. But they make you count a pass even if you grind it out. Something about heat...Last edited by jamesyarbrough; 01-10-2013 at 08:43 AM.
Reply:My profession has nothing to do with welding. I have no idea what you guys are talking about nor do I have any idea what I'm looking at in the image. Can someone give a quick explanation? What is a "bend" test?
Reply:Its where you weld two plates together and bend them to check the weld. Its how you get certified

Reply:Interesting. I think I get it. So the strips are cut perpindiculer to the weld seam where the weld seam transverses the strip in the middle.Anyone have a picture of a failed test? Also, is the weld on the outside of the bend?Last edited by herbet99; 01-10-2013 at 11:21 AM.

Reply:Hi guys if i may ask what is the best technique in overhead 4g ( open root) and 4gf( backing plate) stringer or weave cause i think i read it someware stringer will have more chance on passing a  bendtest.im practicing ( overhead) at home during free time it seems i was able to do  a decent ( wiil post pic) 1/8 6010 75amp rootpass on a 10mm plate with 30deg beveled angle 1/8 rootface and a flat hotpass and capping using 7018 1/8 110 amp but it's all weaving  2sec counting side to side inverted smilley weaving hot and capping and  in rootpass it's smilley no counting pattern in particular just watching that keyhole and puddle.  when i try using stringers in hot pass and capping all hell break loose.i tried stringers in horizontal seems i was a able to do a reasonable bead. but in 3 or 4 position it's very hard well i need to practice more
Reply:Naruto,if you are not experienced and confident with overhead SMAW then a weave technique has a high chance of having slag trapped in the toes.  When I first took my test, I found it easiest to weave the root pass (making sure to burn in well on your toes) and then run stringers for everything after.  All my SMAW tests were X-ray, so I made it a point to grind the toes before running my next bead.  Also, grinding a small groove on the toe of each bead will make the next pass lay in there a little bit flatter! Also, i typically run 1/8 7018 at around 120-125 amps.
Reply:fsisneros  im only a newbie in welding just downloading and reading free stuffs in net for about more than a week from now and just practicing at home.ok thanks for the advice 120-125amp 1/8 7018 for 2g 3g seems fine but in 4g im having difficulty maintaning it flat at 125amp 4g ( hot filler  and capping pass) maybe i must adjust my travel speed. And its been almost all weaving since i learn to weld a liitle bit i found it easyer in weaving than doing stringers , thks for that x-ray advice i'll switch and practice on stringers anyway my goal is to go to a welding school in april and pass all those bending stuffs.  i learned they are using miller xmt450 cc/cv multi so i hope i will be little bit ready  by that time so i wont waste time and effort. And i more i ask around on that school and i heard they are not allowed to use grinders just wirewheel and cup brush so right now im practicing also using cup wirewhell only in between passes even on tie ins in openroot 6010 rootpass, but they are only using bend test.
Reply:I try to do stringers only. I mean with a 1/4" gap you have to bump the sides on the root but stringers are by far the strongest welds and easier
