i'm sure everyone and his dog has seen this but just in case someone didn't this makes tightening and loosening vise grips with gloves on very easy. if you're very careful you can also hoist light material after tying a bowline through the ring.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:i'm sure everyone and his dog has seen this before but just in case someone missed it this makes tightening and loosing vise grips very easy while wearing gloves. in case extra leverage is needed you can slip a screwdriver through the ring. it also comes in handy to lift material after running a bowline through the ring. Reply:Nice idea!  I used to throw those “lifting eyes” away by the dozen at a previous place of employment.  Now I wish that I’ve kept some.Everlast PowerPro 256, Everlast W300 Cooler, Everlast Cart 250Millermatic 211, Spoolgun 100, Miller HD CartJackson W60 Truesight Digital Auto Darkening, Victor 315 Torch sitting on a Harper 830-86 cart

Reply:First I have seen it. Great Idea Doc Looks like a handy way to store them also. My local LWS also rebuilds electric motors and pumps, I will have to see if they have a handful of those lifting eyes to spare next time I am there,If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:great idea.  I have a couple that have a rod welded to the nut that serves the same purpose.  I like your idea better.  i can hang them by the eye or a couple of other things come to mind.  thumbs up!!

Reply:Another thing you can do is look in Grainger for Eye Bolts. Get matching thread and replace the bolt in the Vise Grip, instead of welding to it."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I thought picking eyes in Vice-Grips was a common thing.  I have a few pair that my grandpa gave me 30 years ago and have added to newer ones.  He was a sheet metal worker.  I wish I could have spent more time with him.For the half clamps Armstrong or Wilton cast steel clamps work best for me.  If you are going to chop one make it a good one.Dan D.
Reply:Enco has the eyes like you show.  Can get them in different length  to suit the need .  Only thing is they are a bit pricey.
Reply:we must have 20 vice grips with a 2" ring welded on the screw. The ring is from  3/16 rod.  Let's just say your imagination is the limit on how to use the rings.Real lifting eyes are expensive because they're forged, not cast.  They're also load tested to prove they'll carry a minimum suspended load.  Many are also quenched and tempered medium carbon steel; so be cautious about welding on them and then using them as lifting hardware. Reply:I have a couple of pair with lifting eyebolts installed similar to those pictured above.  But this light duty pair that "lives" in the tool pocket of my overalls comes in handy all the time.  The j-bolt, though not nearly as strong as the lifting eyes, is more versatile for light duty tasks.Larry "I feel for the man who cannot spell a word more than one way."  by Mark TwainLincoln AC225-SLincoln Weldpac 100 Miller Matic 180 (auto set)Miller Spectrum 375 ExtremeMiller Spoolmate 100Victor Super Range II
Reply:I have see guys use large, 5/8" or 3/4" flat washers for this also. I just happened to have just stocked up on large nuts so I used them."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749Yeah. They are the bomb for sure. I know they had one in the weld booth, but the big fab area over in bldg 54 had a table, not kidding like prolly 15' X 15'. The welders would set big jobs up on it & weld right to the table. Seen them build some pretty cool stuff there. At one time, they had the entire local facilities fabrication shop on that plants site, but when they tore the old engine plant & engineering down, bldg 40 ( main tool room & fab shop) went with it. They split the work up over several different plants. We still had a pretty good sized fab shop operation there tho in bldg 56. It was a former press shop, complete with 40' ceilings & two overhead cranes. The entire complex bldg I worked in over there was all the old press metal fab before they built plant 3.It's all gone now.I promptly went home & made several half clamps just like theirs after seeing that table. I do have like six 1/2"-13 tapped holes in my table top for holding stuff down, but welding to the top is faster & just as effective.IMHO of course
Reply:you got some history at that facility!  no pics of the plate dog right now. there must be a load of fitting tricks out there. it would make a great thread.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Here's my mod.  I use this for using a large slide hammer when straightening sheetmetal.  I often weld 3 studs close together, then bend them in so I can clamp all three at once with the vicegrips.  I also sometimes weld a tab and clamp the grips on the tab to pull out sheetmetal.

Reply:It needs to be wide enough for the slide hammer hook.
