Question: I want to do work on my truck frame. I'll be using a Lincoln 180HD with no gas. I'm currently using .035 Lincoln NR-211 wire which looks right there on the borderline of 3/16 and 1/4. Is my current .035 Lincoln NR-211 wire wire sufficient for welding 1/4" plating or would you recommend I upgrade my rollers and wire size?
Reply:That machine and wire is plenty. If I can use that wire in a 120v machine and pass a bend test on 3/8 steel you should have no problem welding a truck frame.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:NR-211 is probably not a good choice of wire to go with for welding on vehicles.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:Not really enough info to answer that question.  Many newer vehicles are using high strength heat treated alloy frames and 70K wire isn't the correct match. Also these new steels are very particular about weld procedures. You can't simply slap weld on things any more and be good to go. That's why many new trucks come with specific markings saying NOT to weld on them. It's not that it can't be done, only that the procedures are beyond the average welder who doesn't have the WPS for that frame. The usual caveat applies here. Anything structural that goes on the road, whether it's  a trailer, suspension component, frame or hitch, needs to be done right. If you can't make code quality welds in all positions, you most likely shouldn't be doing this repair. From your basic question, I wonder if you can do that..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I'm also wondering what type of truck frame you're talking about?   What make, model and year truck?  If it's like an F-250,  Chevy 2500 or any of the smaller 1/2 or 1/4-ton mini-Toyota/Nissans, they're not using 1/4" frames, last time I looked underneath my own.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
