Which do you feel is best. Hobart, Lincoln, Miller all seem good but for different reasons.
Reply:A lot of it is personal preference. Also depends somewhat on what you plan to do.I see that you are in PA. I'm near Harrisburg and actually have a Century 120V machine for sale. Comes with cart, helmet, extra parts, etc.
Reply:I have a Century welder myself. It works great for the price and what I do. Used Hobart, and Lincoln, all worked well. Just a matter of personal prefference I guess.(spell check!!! )Why buy when you can build
Reply:I have used many but prefer Lincoln. Also, If the welding shop is closed after hours or on the weekend, you can run to your local Home Depot or Lowes and pick up contact tips or nozzles if you need them even the Lincoln brand wire if need be. One note, Lincoln Electric now owns the brand line of Century welders and battery chargers. Stay away from the Harbor Freight units. Bought one cheap on sale, kept it about a week and got rid of it. Not, worth the trouble at any price!A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter Victor O/A
Reply:I'm new here but I'm in a similar situation so maybe I can spur some discussion. I'm not limiting myself to 115V because my shop is setup for 230V, but I am very concerned with price. My dad is willing to spend a good amount of money (400-500 I would say) on a good welder. I've been totally overwhelmed with all the different welders and info and specs that can be had. I'd like to be able to weld up a header with a thick flange as well as do some body work among other things, aluminum capability(especially a TIG) would be nice but not necessary. I would love to have TIG but the cheaper units don't seem to be that great and I'd like to avoid ordering anything. Tractor Supply has the Hobart 140 115V MIG for 420 bucks which seems like a high quality unit but doesn't seem like all that much power for the price. I think I'm going to look into the Clarke units, I've used the 130 and I think I need the extra power of the 180(although it is 220V). Maybe someone can say something to 115V welders though so I'm not hijacking this thread. I like stick personally but why do people prefer MIG so much more? I think TIG is great(not having done it though) but the only option would be an Inverter TIG in this price range. MIG just seems to slap the metal on there from the machine that I used. If I should start another thread let me know. Thanks,John
