But that is not the case..Another busted journal on a press roller..Seems easy enough..Drill..Bore..Install new end...While heating discover crack around the head itself..Back in the machine and drill some more..Next post.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:And drill some more..Time for the boring bar..Time for a bigger boring bar..End of roller done..Time for another new shaft..Next post.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:New heads...004 shrink and while you are at it face off where the weld goes..Grind the backside where the weld goes..Heat and shrink on shaft..Let cool and do the rear head same way..I only shrink heads to shafts when building/repairing press rollers..Get the positioner out again..One more time.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 01-17-2013 at 05:13 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:ZAP my positioner is the same make and looks like the same size as yours, but a little newer so to speak, do you worry about overloading it weight wise at all. I don't, I know the specs on it but it never even burps for help, so i'll just keep pushing it. Whats your opinion bud?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:OK as we continue..Take the head assy and put it back in the machine for turning the OD for shrink fit into the roller.. .004 this time..Then face the front off and then put the radius tool to work..Much easier to do all this now rather when the roller is assembled..Before heating/inserting clean out the chips!I use a magnet taped to a aluminum rod for this..Heat tube..Install.Next.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Now weld in the head..Done sideways..Now put the repair end back in the chuck..Indicate the ROLLER in to zero..Turn the weld off and put a new steady rest spot on the shaft..Now set the steady rest up on the new spot..Next.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Zap,I don't know what the hell you're doing half the time, but I sure enjoy watching it. Keep it up!
Reply:Now flip the assy around and insert brass ring in the chuck so you don't mark up the finished journal on the other end..Slide the steady rest to the other end of the machine..This makes centering the shaft so easy because the rest is already set up dead center..Face to length..Rough it out..Let cool and finish Monday..I had to use a big piece to do this because we did not have any 4140 to use and this piece was salvaged from another smash and crash job..And now it's off to the dentist....zap! Reply:I don't know jack about lathes. I want to. I saw that weld on what I think is called the steady rest. I was wondering a few things....why did you not fix that? Is that safe? I am scared of spinning heavy metal. I would want everything to make me feel warm and fuzzy. Also, so does the material just spin inside the steady rest on the brass tips? how long do those tips last? are they spring loaded on the inside? Reply:Here we have a homemade rest..Actually there are 2 of them for this machine also..The brass parts are made in house and I have tall ones and short ones and these rests that I can swap out as needed for different size shafts/rollers..They adjust just like the first one but use nuts and bolts for adjusting/locking in place..So now you know how they work!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I finally had to use my steady rest last week at work. Even after reading all of Zap's post and pics I forgot the bits of emery cloth. Luckily all I was doing was center drilling a long piece of 2" aluminum bar for the live center so I could turn it down to 1.5", so the marring made no difference. Oh, and Zap, I realize in your shop (like most) time is money. But my boss would blow a gasket over a floor littered with shavings.
