I always lurk and look at these great ideas on this site now I need help please...I am looking to build a gun safe 1/2 plate is what I am thinking my local steel shop will cut the size I need I just weld it together ..it will be bolted to the floor in my house...do any of you have pointers or ideas on something like this? I am open to new ideas and any info I may get on this thanks in advance..
Reply:I would make a inner shell for this gun safe.  Making sure both the outside wall(s) and outer wall(s) are water tight.  Then I would pour concrete or Morter between these layers.  Preventing a Cutting torch from cuting through and making it heavier.  Also the Concrete or Morter will provide a barrier if there was ever a fire.....  I wouldnt say "Fire Proof"  but definitely buy you more time.Really the possibilities arer endless on How crazy you wanna get with it.  Buddy of mine made a amazing Gun Vault.  Looks just like a closet when you walk by it.Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Knowing the machine, and your ability level will help. The lock mechanism is going to be the toughest part of this I would think.Don't forget to take into account the weight when you're determining where this thing is going. Might need to add some support under the house just to be on the safe side. How big are you planning on making it? 1/2" plate isn't light. and depending on how big you're going you might not even need to worry about bolting it down. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:I have concrete floors so weight will not be an issue I am thinking two 1/4 inch plates now with a concrete filler this thing keeps getting bigger and heavier ..good news is I am home so it will stay here till I die or if I move will up sale the safe for the new owners..I am still working on the locking mechanism lots of ideas there...I just can not see buying a safe and not trusting it and the reality is I can not justify spending thousands of dollars on a safe for a couple thousand dollars of guns at this point I do know I will add to my collection in the future but spending now on it makes no sense when I can build bigger and cheaper myself at this point..
Reply:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Um ok ? That looks to be complete garbage that I will not waste my time reading...anyone else ?
Reply:Thank you for cleaning that post up...ignore this one ^^
Reply:Door / hinges/ lock mechanism will be the tough part of this challenge. I looked at a safe project years ago, but chose to pass as it's fairly complicated. I also looked at the concrete idea. Safe doesn't have to be water or air tight, but you do want the  crete to flow well. Best bet is to use a concrete vibrator to get stiff concrete to "flow" or to use an additive like "Super P" that wets up the crete with no additional water added.  The water you put in will have to dry out and an enclosed steel box is an invitation to internal rust if you add in too much water. Also "normal" concrete will shrink when it dries so you will have a very small "gap" between the crete and the steel to collect all this moisture.A few things I did find  while researching my project that might help point you in the right direction if you choose to go this route.Take a look at water tight bulkhead doors similar to those used on Navy vessels. They are designed to lock the perimeter at several points  with the throw of one wheel. Easiest way would be to find some at a marine  salvage yard and just make use of what some one else already designed. Try and get the frame that matches as well. Best bet would be one off an older cruiser, but those were all scrapped years ago, so I don't know how lucky you will be with that. Figure for the door you will want heavy plate, or plan to have to box the edges to prevent pry bar attacks. The door is usually the weakest point.A few picts from my trip to the battleship  USS New Jersey a few years back that might help some... Reply:Good idea thank you..
Reply:I would definitely shoot for the door style and thickness from DSW's photo of the gun turret base (last photo)  I'm thinking that it is pretty much torch proof! ;-)JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180

Reply:Depending on your location, the concrete will store moisture. May want to thing about cutting a circle into one of the sides and installing a Golden Rod, humidity control device. It will help on your investment.http://www.goldenroddehumidifiers.com/

Reply:I am planning on doing this also, however not as heavy, Diesel has a fantastic Idea with pouring concrete.. Most people buy gun safes for the fire hazard first and security second.. I think you should look at why you need a gun safe and what you want it to do, than proceed from there.. You cant steal it, if you cant see it.. I have been very creative inside my house on hiding things, but they offer no fire protection.14' PowerMig 210 MP13'Burntables 5x10 CNC Table14' SAE300 HE on a 12' Ram 4500 60 CA 4x4. Reply:OK.  I've been inside the #2 turret on the USS Iowa when it was in service and figured that the photo was part of the structure underneath that house the elevators for rounds and powder.JackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:Never made it down there. I missed my chance to go aboard the USS Missouri when she was in service with our Scout troop because I was sick. They don't have that part of the New Jersey open yet. They have the upper room of the #1 turret open so you can go in and look  to see where they load the guns, but that's about it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:It is amazing the thickness of the steel and the thought that went into the design of battle ships.  I have visited the Alabama in mobile, the Missouri when it visited New Orleans.  Also the Lexington and Forestal when they visited New Orleans.  My all time fav was the Nautilus in New Haven, Conn.As to a gun safe, a few years ago one of the popular gun magazines ran a design for converting a walk-in closet into a safe.  It involved removing all of the sheet rock and installing pipes in the studs. Inside the pipe was cold rolled bar stock that was left loose in the pipe.  Any attempt to hack saw the pipes wuold be defeated because the bar stock would roll inside the pipe.  They had other good ideas to slow down would be burglars.  "G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
