Shrink Wrap On The Valves?

Went thru these in 2 weeks on the channel job..Got out another tank and found this..First time I ever saw that and we get all our gas delivered from the same place..Must be something new..Anyone else getting shrink wrapped valves?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:My LWS has been doing that for a while now.  Probably so that after they are filled at the local/regional fill-station, they get 'sealed' up.  This way everyone 'knows' they are in the 'done' pile and no one is cracking any valves open and spewing/losing any contents.  Oh and it helps keep 'crud' out of the valve seating area.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I've been getting mine that way from GTS-Welco for awhile. I forget who the tech school gets their gas from, but they don't come wrapped..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:all my tanks have came that way for a while now but it seems that the seal is almost always broken to some extent too as they handle the bottle from here with no safety cap so it rips at least a bit... I like it , I get real tired of going to the tank room and cracking a bottle to see if it's full and hooking it up only to find out it has 200lbs in it, cause somebody opened the door, and it was easier to leave the bottle on the full side of the room instead of rolling it over to the empty side.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I've been getting ones like that for a couple of years now.  The shrink wrap is very brittle.It makes it easy to take off, but also easy to accidentally rip off.Still, it keeps the valves nice and clean, and I for one really like it.

Reply:anytime I get a brand new shinny first time its ever been given to a customer bottle from GTS its got the plastic. Reply:They should put those external caps on them like the small propane bottles have. That way there'd be some protection both from and to the shop. Shoving internal plastic inserts in there stands a chance of grinding off tiny plastic shavings as they get pushed in/pulled out. Reply:Apparently, the bottle shrink-wrapping practice is becoming more common.I just got the first bottle I've encountered with a shrink-wrapped valve, in Washington state.  It was just a welding-grade, pure Argon, 155cf customer-owned exchange bottle.
Reply:Only been welding since 2004, but that's a first!  (is that absolutely necessary?  I guess it'll keep crap out of the valve at least!)Just wait...in another five years OSHA and WCB will make it a requirement.  Rule 627.5 sub conjigation F section 5.2 on the left just under 5.1 but above 6...all valves not connected to a regulator are to be shrink wrapped and then capped.  The shrinkwrap shall have at least 1" of shrink and be double wrapped.  Removal of said wrap shall be conducted by a fully trained individual with a knife specified to be incapable of damaging the regulator (see sec. 87b, par. 102. {Sec 87b, par 102:  A butterknife shall be used as a control upon which all knives shall be tested upon, regarding the removal of plastic from the regulator.  If a knife is found unsuitable, it is to be dulled on a belt sander by a specialist and then be re-tested by a trained Quality Control technician with a "b" certification, documented under sub section X, (see page 2256).  If a belt sander is not available, the knife is to be discarded immediately and a knife meeting these requirements must be used.})  The inspection of the shrink wrap, as well as the process, shall be done by a qualified technician with an engineering degree in seals and gaskets with a strong bias towards shrinkage....As has been said, propane bottles have a teathered plastic valve cover!  Instead of...*snicker* shrink wrap...just use those!  Even easy to attach to the bottles.  Make a cap on a tether that will zap strap around the neck of the valve!  No need to modify existing bottles and you won't have to hire a guy to sit there with a hot air gun!Last edited by mb_welder; 07-19-2012 at 06:36 AM.

Reply:Went to my LWS and exchanged 3 empty argon tanks for full ones. When I got back to the shop and took the caps off they all had shrink wrap on them. Reply:Here in the UK we have Plastic Caps, which seal the opening to the valve. I guess its to stop any debris or anything falling into the threads and breaking the seal between the regulator and bottle.They come like that for as long as i can remember so its not a new thing
Reply:Picked up an oxy tank from the LWS today with shrink wrap over the valve. I'd rather have shrink wrap, than dirt in the valve, yet the safety cap should prevent this from happening anyway.
