I just got a #5 Stanley Planer and when I was testing it at home I was turning the knob that raises and lowers the blade when it came out. I checked the threads on the knob and on the planer but they don't look stripped. What's the thread pitch on the knob? Or does anyone have suggestions or advice on putting the knob back? Here is the knob and thread I am talking about.http://i.imgur.com/XWIjFe3.jpg
Reply:Blurry pic but they look like left hand threads. (lefty tighty, righty loosey)....
Reply:I already know they're left handed threads. My issue is that the knob wont turn at all on theThreads. It feels like it's seized.
Reply:If they are the right pitch but gnarled up I apply some lapping compound to the threads and run the nut back and forth to make everything run nice and free. It takes some patience but as long as the nut runs a little bit further each time when you get to the end and clean the lapping compound out it will be a very smooth running thread. I usually use 220 grit for most thread repairs under 1"
Reply:Could be that the knob has been ran to far down on the threads and has "locked" down tight, there should be left hand threads on the end that goes into the tool and right hand threads on the nut.Try holding onto the end of the stud and work the nut back and forth.Joe
Reply:I sent you a PM.
Reply:Finally got it off. I cut a slot at the top of the threads using a cut off disc then I heated the brass piece with an oxy acetylene torch.http://i.imgur.com/ZqdH0n2.jpg |
