Reply:so you're looking for essentially a trailer with a electric/hydrolic mechanism that lifts the bail after you've backed up into it. Correct? There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:I would think it would be fairly easy to reverse engineer it from the pictures on the link. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:just like the link you put up. slides into back of pickup. iv been looking for hyd. powerpacks used and cant find any. almost thinking itd be cheaper just to buy one. around here i can get spears for $90 apiece,+$355 for powerpack +$120 for coupler=$655 not to mention i still have to buy iron and build frame, hoses, fittings etc.MM 251MM 135Lincoln Pro cut 55Bobcat 250Miller Thunderbolt ac/dcolder ac forneyJackson nexgen 3n13-Smith OP setups97 Dodge dieselMakita chopsawJet swivel head bandsawlincoln tig 300/30030a spoolgunpuma port. gas air comp.
Reply:Without looking at the photo's.Would it be cheaper to mount a winch up by the gooseneck ball to pull with instead of trying to engineer a powerpack system?
Reply:I've built a couple and repaired a lot more. But I usually just tell my customers to go buy one because I can't make one as cheap as they sell them.  I've always kind of liked the one they make with the cylinder and power pack off to one side. I believe that J&I made/make it though don't hold me to that. The nice thing about it is that you can just pull the spears, leaving the unit in the bed and still pull a gooseneck. Not to mention better cargo (sacks of feed or the like) space.   Ok here's a picture of it.http://auctions.fastline.com/v100/J-...c73d5af65.aspx  Winch systems are out there. I've worked on a lot of those. They're never as good as the hydraulic in any form but they are cheaper initially. In the long run though you end up buying winches every couple of years because cheap electric winches are not up to the job. It costs less long term to go hydraulic not to mention they're easier to use.Last edited by irish fixit; 01-25-2013 at 05:31 PM.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:main reason for hydraulic, is when not in use i want to be able to uncouple lines so i can couple them to equipment to move/lift to work or weld on. maybe someone out there has a powerpack they would sell cheap or trade me for something.or maybe a whole hyd. spike setup they would trade for.MM 251MM 135Lincoln Pro cut 55Bobcat 250Miller Thunderbolt ac/dcolder ac forneyJackson nexgen 3n13-Smith OP setups97 Dodge dieselMakita chopsawJet swivel head bandsawlincoln tig 300/30030a spoolgunpuma port. gas air comp.
Reply:Have you thought about powering it with a hand pump unit until you can afford a powered unit? Your only driving one cylinder. Old dump trailers often had a two stage hand pump that could go pretty good. Irish, do those things have a 1.5" to 2" cylinder?Obviously you're not going to build a one off for less than the mass produced... but where's the fun in that. I sometimes build stuff just because I can or I have most the parts on hand. Have you scrounged up any parts yet? I'd start asking around for an old hydraulic parts... a log splitter for example would give you everything you'd need with room to spare.
Reply:It depends on the stroke and thus the mounting point of the cylinder on the spike whether a 2" cylinder is big enough or not. I mostly see 2 1/2" x 10" or 12" stroke cylinders on them which is barely enough if the bales are heavy. But as with anything like this the leverage point, and degree's of movement on the bale spike make a big difference.   I have built a number of spears into flat beds. The method I use makes for about 100 degree's of spear movement (the spears are straight up in the retracted position so the bale sits on the bed rather than hanging out the back). I've found that it requires a 4" x 8" stroke cylinder to do this reliably with heavy bales. I can use a 3" x 12" stroke cylinder to get the same power but only some trucks have the room under them for that.   There are some pictures of hay spears I built into flat beds in this thread.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...hlight=flatbedMillermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:I built a bale deck back in 98, in March of 2012 I rebuilt it and this is a video of it's operation. It uses a 4 1/2" x 20" cylinder.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Do8YRkF3TQ[/ame]Leo
