How do you guys do this/what is the correct technique for this? Reason using smaw because I like to weld outside but using vertical up 7018 3/32 seems to just blow through 1/8". Or does my technique just suck (quite possible )
Reply:85-90 amps. Push the rod into the joint and let the flux drag. Really easy after you have done it a few times.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:ah so just straight vertical up stringer bead then, no side to side or christmas tree weave?
Reply:Correct. But everyone has their own way to do things. What works for me may not work for you.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:3/32 6013 vertical down, straight down or sloped down like 45 degrees. I just welded some end caps yesterday, thin plate to 0.100 wall tubing yesterday and it was beautiful. Im not sure of the joint configuration you are using, or what your welding, but if its 1/8th or thinner chances are you wont need to use low hydrogen and or vertical up. A proper downhand weld should be strong enough on that thin metal. If its not thin corners you are welding then you can use 6011 for deeper penetration. Actually, if its not thin edge welds you might get away with 7018 if that's all you have, but go cold and fast.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:yeah like doug said, 3/32" 6013 downward travel is the way to go. i worked on a housing project and it was welding thin galvanized studs. all we used was 6013 and it worked very good.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:I run 3/32 7018 vertical down in these situations. Less penetration.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:For me its 1/8" 6011 downhill. 90 amps for 1/8" material, down to around 70-75 for 16 gage.Last edited by 12V71; 07-10-2014 at 10:48 PM.
