Hello and thanks for the time to read and reply. I am a plumber by trade and been in the industry 40 pulse years. I learned how to weld as a young man on my uncles farm. Used a Lincoln the one with the big wheel on it. I recently hade to do some welding on pipe welding some TOC. And after a lot of practice. BTW I bought a Lincoln a/c dc machine looks like a tombstone. I have found how much I missed doing this. I am looking to take the 6g. I live in New York. One of my concerns is do they require using E7018 in the down hand. Please any advise would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks again
Reply:Haven't come across a downhill low-hi pipe test but have had to do downhill plates for the boilermakers.  Have you seen this page....http://www.pftf597.org/training/welding-certifications/.
Reply:I do not believe any procedure to use 7018 downhill.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I have heard of it being done. Supposedly in a local processing plant all the gas lines to the boilers were welded 7018 downhill. This was about 20 years ago and it was a powerplant piping contractor telling me about it. He was just shaking his head over it in disbelief.
Reply:I just don't see ANY benefit to running it down, I have seen it done, but only once on some 14ga ductwork sort of stuff that carried dog-food dust. the other guy ran downhill cause he couldn't make it go up without blowing holes. you couldn't hardly chip the slag off of his weldsbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Normally 7018 is not designed for downhill welding and I doubt anyone can make an acceptable downhand root pass with 7018.FWIW some european companies have produced basic electrodes that are designed for downhill welding on pipelines. These are used for filler and cap passes where cellulosic electrodes are not permitted due to their poor impact properties. An example of such an electrode is Bohler BVD series (BVD stands for Basic Vertical Down).
Reply:Thank you i have never seen this. Thanks again
Reply:I really appreciate all the reply's. My next question is running E7018 up hill. I would like to post a pic of what mine looks like could someone explain how to do this. Also is / here and pic on this site that i could look at to compare. I know all you guys have gone to welding school and hope you don't mind my questions and asking for the help. Just and old timer trying to relearn.
Reply:I see no benefit either, Just heard of it being done. I'm thinking I'm going to grab some pipe scraps and give it a try just for fun.
Reply:this actually is one of my welds when I was trying to learn my 200. this is my off-hand, 9 0'clock side and gives a good example of what is NOT good. notice the obvious starts, and the amount of undercut along the right side of the weld. AGAIN, for those quick readers, I AM STATING THAT THIS WELD IS NOT GOOD.weldingtipsandtricks.com is a great place to start learning on how to work up-hill. awesome videos.and for the record, non of my real welds that serve any purpose look like above lolbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:7018 is similar to a fill freeze electrode, running it downhand the molten slag tries to overrun the puddle. 6010 / 6011 electrodes are considered fast freeze making it possible to run downhand for the root on certain pipe jobs and  some sheet metal work.REAL TRUCKS DON'T HAVE SPARK PLUGS
Reply:Anyone who try's it, please upload your pics!!I've tried it, and it seems all you deposit is slag, with barely any metal. If there is someone here that can do it, please show us your pics!!
Reply:It CAN be done.  I've done it before welding bore casing in the middle of nowhere when I ran out of 6010 or 7010.  But that's not welding to any code.  Or even any inspection for that matter. 5/32" works pretty well actually on .375 wall pipe, as long as you've got enough machine to carry it.  SA200 will.  Bobcat 225 not so much... Likes to break arc too easily.  Or ours does anyway.  I've read that some places run 7018 downhill building like oilfield tanks.  I think where most people mess up is trying to outrun the slag.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion
Reply:sounds like something cbi would do on it's tank farm jobs. i believe it's used as a capping pass.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
