I have several mag drills and a good many HSS and Carbide tipped cutters that I use for my personal use. Well word got around that I have these and I am getting some calls to drill some 1" and 2" plate and bar. Maybe you guys can give some idea what I should charge (in my shop) per hole and by the hr or some kind of formular. These cutters are expensive and sharping is not cheap around here. I'am in N. Ms. Thanks
Reply:I suggest you charge an hourly rate plus a drilling charge based on time. Often shops charge differently for shop time and welding time to compensate for the cost of consumables. I would charge enough to recover sharpening costs plus the occasional breakage. Find out how much it cost to rent a mag drill from the local tool rental. Maybe people are calling you because you are cheaper than the rental charge?
Reply:Lotechman, the calls Ive got are for 1 or 2 holes. I dont think by the hr. would work, probably need to price by the hole per dia & thickness. I'll see what Mag drills rent for. Thanks.
Reply:Using a mag drill I wouldn't be charging much less than half an hour minimum charge rather than quarter, plus your travel time. I know just how expensive those cutters can be.
Reply:I agree with lotechman, Cutting tools are not cheap, not to mention neither is a mag drill. I would charge by the half hour, with a minimum. Also as mentioned above be sure to cover your travel expenses and time. Don't just think about the time to drill the hole, you need to think about setup and take down time, positioning, drilling all wear and tear on your machine, and these things add up. The biggest factor with something like that is the convienence. Most will be glad to pay rather than drilling with a hand drill. I mean if you are just trying to cover expenses thats one thing but if you are looking to make a profit you should keep everything in mind as far as what your cost will be and what your time is worth to you. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Thanks Guys for the replies, only found one place within 60 mi. of me that rents ; $45 per day ( no cutter ). In shop MIG & stick welding around here is $40 / hr. (min. charge 1hr). I am guessing for in shop $45-50 / hr, 1/2 hr min. except for material that will require carbide cutters. How much to increase price for hard material ? Theres one place that may be mag-drilling about 25 mi away, if so I'll find out whats he charges. Thanks.
