ok, ive been pushing the amps up and up on some 1/8 6011's to the point where the flux burns off. Just wondering how hot people often burn them?Using Tapatalk
Reply:Hello dirtyfloats, you will notice that the manufacturer has amperage ranges listed for their electrodes. These are generally based on use of calibrated machines and take into account some middle ground. Beyond that, I personally look at the end of a half-run rod and analyze how it looks. If it is black/burnt a 1/4 to 3/8 from the end and the rest of the rod flux hasn't changed color then I consider that amperage as not being too much. At the point where the rest of the rod is beginning to exhibit a color change then I will back down the amperage slightly until the flux color doesn't change. Hope that helps a bit. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I hear that. The rods I'm burning have no range listed on the box, so I'm usually around 100 amps. Though i also found i can burn up rods as high as 140 sometimes. Anyone else got numbers?Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0151 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:About 120-125 (vertical down) seems to work well with 1/8" 6011.80-100 for other positions.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:I just watch my puddle and go up or down to get the results I want. I have 3 Miller Trailblazers and 3 other Digital readout shop power machines and every one seems to have a different output for a given setting. As far as the color of the stubs, I don't feel that's much of an indicator, other than telling me Im pushing a rod size too hard and need to move up a size if they get blackened at 3". I usually stop a rod at 3-4" because at the upper heat limits they burn erratically past that point to me. That's mostly with 5P 6010. Just my experience doing pipe work, different size and thicknesses dictate the amps for me.
Reply:I don't care what any machine says for an amp number. It's all on how the puddle looks to me when I'm welding. I like to weld  as hot as I can yet still be able to control the puddle and undercut.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I agree, i just watch the puddlle. The past few days however i am dumping rod welding 1/4" and 1/2" plate to a 3" solid round bar. So, obviously multi pass welding, and i was finding i could crank up the amps really high on some passes to get into the bar.Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0151 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:Curious use for 6010/11 with so much metal to lay down?Did you consider other rods that put it down faster like 7014, 7018, 7024?Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Yeah, i thought about using 7024's or 7018's but i really wanted to dig into the 3" bar, and was thinking that they wouldnt do it as well as the 6011's.  Chances are i will switch to 7024 to finish it all, and give it a nice smooth airfoil shape.Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0151 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk

Reply:screw the 6011.7018 all the way.
