I just bought a MM175 and am now looking for some type of metal saw.Would this Grizzly metal bandsaw be a good saw for the money? I figure that the metal I will be wanting to cut will easily be within the capacity of this saw. Or should I be looking at chop saws? If you think the Grizzly saw will probably work for me, do you have any suggestions as to where I could possibly purchase it beside direct from Grizzly?Or should I be looking at chop saws? http://www.grizzly.com/products/item...emnumber=G1010Thanks,Scott
Reply:How about the Jet brand of band saws? Does anyone have a link to Jet's homepage? Thanks,
Reply:Most of those small 4x6 band saws are about the same quality. Harbor Freight makes the cheapest priced and the cheapest quality. However, if you are not looking for production then the Grizzly will do the job. The only problem I have is when you want to cut long stock at an angle, then you have either turn the saw or have a lot of space around the to swing the stock. There are some good web site cover modifications done to these saws. Type ''bandsaw modication'' in google or ask jeeves. Also check out ebay for used saw, I got one for $100. Good blades are most important.
Reply:Thanks, tap. I did find a couple of good websites using your Google suggestion - appreciate it.A guy at work recently bought a Grizzly and it was damaged right out of the box. He called Grizzly & had major problems with their customer support. He eventually returned it & bought one from Northern Tool. So I stopped in at Northern the other night & wasn't very impressed with the models they had on the floor.I did find out that Menards carries the Jet line, so I plan on checking them out after work some night next week.Been checking ebay also.
Reply:I just picked up a new harbor freight bandsaw for $110. This guy I found on ebay was selling them near me so I stopped by his warehouse and bought it after making sure it ran ok. First thing I did was weld a support brace to the cheap stand and it is sturdy now. I had this old scissor jack I cut in a dozen pieces to test it out. For $110 it sure was worth it. Fairly quiet and nice cuts, but all band saws cut good I'm sure. Also picked up a 3hp harbor freight chop saw with blade for 65. Yea, I read all the reviews about them crappin out. I could have bought one of 20+ for $20 but they weren't very impressive to say the least. The one I got seems rather stout, but I bet I'll only use it if my bandsaw is broke.Thermal Arc 185TSW
Reply:$110 for an HF bandsaw, eh? Hmmm...I did check out the Jet model 414458(?) bandsaw at Menards the other day. $260 and not a bad unit to my uneducated eyes. And the Homier Traveling Tool Show is in the area tomorrow & Tuesday so I hope to be able to check out their models also. However the email from Homier regarding the show info contained bad links & now their website has been down for a couple of days. No warm fuzzy's there. So as of now the Jet is at the head of the pack over the Grizzly's & Homiers.
Reply:This guy has another one listed on ebay for 99 in case anyone is interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1Thermal Arc 185TSW
Reply:I have had good luck with my harbor freight band saw ... other than the motor catching fire the other day.... of course we had been over useing it ia bit (gang cuting is so fast!!) it toke me about 15 min to drop in a old motor from a drill press and it is back to working fine... the green flames were entertaining though.MPHeat it and Beat it!!!http:www.Fallinghammerproductions.com
Reply:I have that exact model of grizzly bandsaw. I'm actually very happy with it. The major things I can tell you right off is to buy a good bi-metal bandsaw blade and replace the one they sent with it, put in some time and effort on tuning and aligning the blade guids so that you have a good straight and vertical blade, and bet a decent adjustable angle guide (little metal square with angle markings on it, and a flat metal bar that can be moved to show the proper angle) this is invaluable to align the clamp to the blade. Hope that helps, the guy who delivered mine actually helped me take it out of the box to make sure it wasn't damaged, and then even helped me put it together...I guess different people may get lucky with grizzly or unlucky...
Reply:I have the jet horizontal bandsaw and it works good especially for the money. Cuts nice and is fairly quiet. I got some lennox diemaster 2(i believe) blades for it from a local dealer and they cut excellent. The clamp is not the best, doesnt hold certain shapes very well and its kinda slow to open and close. I am pretty happy with the saw overall. Paid 299.00 for it. |
