Do you guys prefer any particular brand of cutting oil? Different brands/ or types for various drilling/cutting/ machining methods? How about those wax/stick thingies? I use Mike-o-cut, by Ashland oil of.... gasp.... Texas!!!  great stuff. It was previously "Morse" brand.    I also use Ridgid brand "Stainless" Cutting oil in my 535 pipe threader.... Much improvement!!!. It' a little too thin for drilling though. We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:We buy WD - 40 in bulk containers. Seems to work well as an all round lube.It is clean, and the smell doesn't stick with you as some others. No, IMHO, it's not the best but you can get it anywhere and it does the job.  Stick wax works well on band saw operations.  Tap-Magic is tops but it is expensive. They offer alum. and stainless versions also.RG
Reply:i got no preference...i use old use motor oil outta the welding machine usualy IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:oil and cutting oil are not the same thingChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:lol I know but its better than waterIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:at work we had a drill press oil...but I dont remember the brand.  Cut-X or somehitng?  I dont remember.  Anyway, it worked well.  But at home I am poor white redneck trailer trash and so I just use my used oil from the bobus.  It bugs me to have to change the oil in her when I personally dont think it neeeds to be lmaoIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I generally just use any of the cutting/tapping oils. Heck I don't use two cans a year maybe. Unless I find them laying sideways on the table with the cap off. Then I need a rag and some more oil.If I can't find my cutting oil easy I'll use whatever is close tho. It's all about friction reduction without putting down a lube that's totally impervious to the cutting edge, so thick it holds chips or so thin it takes a ton.  I think there's a lot of room to move around in for general purposes. The more important the tool or piece being worked on, the more important the choice gets.
Reply:I use Rapid-Tap cutting oil on steel.  A-9 brand for aloooominum."I need this parade like I need a hole in the head"~John F.Kennedy
Reply:In all drilling i've done, I've found that a quality cutting oil makes a big difference, especially when cutting difficult materials such as some grades of stainless, and the larger the bit, the better the fluid. I mean larger, as in 1 1/2" and up. I know most people will never do that , but it does make for less trips to the grinder!!, and usually less breakage too.  In the pipe threader, I was having problems threading, .... Oh my.... Yup, I'm gonna say it .... "Black Pipe",  Maybe it was a low grade, maybe it was "White Pipe" painted black, maybe we will never know....but I was tearing threads, and no... It wasn't the dies, I've got dozens of sets, alloy, High speed,  SS, and even titanium coated, all of them ridgid, and none of them dull. Some even brand new. I finally changed the dark cutting oil to the new Ridgid Stainless oil, and was amazed. even the old dull dies would cut a thread with a mirror finish. So if you think it really doesn't make a difference, try to convince someone else!Last edited by BBchevy396; 01-13-2006 at 02:02 AM.We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:i like to use refrigeration oil out of old ac compressors. very light flows well all temps and free to me dad is service manager at a local hvac company love those free coils for different projects lol
Reply:I am in the hvac business and also use refrigerant oil.It is a mineral oil base and the new refigerants need polyolester oil and have not tried that for cutting or drilling yet but will pobably work fine also.Best of all I charge the customer when I add oil to there compressors and usually have a half gallon left over.Nobody moves nobody gets hurt(safety first)millematic passportmiller 375 plasmacutter
Reply:i do major lathe/bridgeport..ahhh any machine type work and i love soluable oil and waterlooks like milk when mixed rightuse that with a spray mister..results are very goodplus it adds in cooling and that = WAY longer tool lifeyou can use it on any metal...stainless especially(mention the word heat to stainless and it gets hard FAST)keep it cool ...zap!
Reply:That Ridgid tapping oil is some good stuff-  My wife works there too!
Reply:I also do alot of machining, and use soluable oil/water in my machines. But I have been using "koolmist"? I think, on the mill. Seems to work good.  Johnnyweld, ridgid does make some quality cutting oils.... cool to have a woman that works in the industry. Does she come home all lubed up?  .... just kidding! We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
