Ok so I'm a machinist currently a Cnc machinist but also went to school for manual.at work I allways get the tuff jobs wich means we either don't have the proper measuring device or the proper tooling to machine it.the last part I machined I had to set my length with a tape measure with a tol. Of +/- .01 and now here I am this morning on a job turning am OD with a boring bar turned upside down running ccw:......is it to much to ask to get the appropriate tooling? Grrrrr I get the jobs because I can make it happen but at the same time it would be nice to just load a program set my geom. And hit go.....sorry to vent her but when I vent to my wife she just gets this glazed over look in her eyes lol
Reply:concerning the boring bar, why not make one, since your a trained machinist.  That was one of the first things I did when I got my lathe.  Then it's just a matter of obtaining the carbide inserts. As far as the measuring, maybe purchasing your own & storing them in your own lockable tool box?  Mechanics do this as a requirement for the job.  Maybe that would work for you, one or two tools at a time?MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:I have about 8k in tools and my box alone is around 2k it would take me longer to make the tools than to order them I work for a multi million dollar shop.....they can afford it lol besides most of the measureing devices they are missing are gauges wich run around 4k ish each or bore mica wich are around 800Last edited by texasrednek; 02-02-2013 at 01:28 PM.
Reply:how long have you been doing machine work?tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:12 years profesionaly but I used to follow my dad around in his shop growing up learning to weld and machine I love it
Reply:Let me start by saying I couldn't machine my way out of a wet paper bag, but if you're "getting the job done", then ....Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:no your right its getting dont but its just frustrating about 2 months ago i had parts that were butress threads with no gauge .....couldnt verify that the threads were corect there were 12 pcs and at 5thousand dollars a piece that is just alot of un necissary stress on me all they had to do was order the guage its one thing if it was only a couple orders a year but our shop just changed its client base so we are getting alot of new jobs that require measureing instruments we dont have or tooling we dont have the purchase order goes through 4 levels of bureacracy before reaching the floor for  production and those people are suposed to verify we have the proper things to run the part so when jobs fall through the cracks it gets passed to me to re tool and reprogram using what we have on hand wich now is like 3 or 4 times a week lately
Reply:Sounds like they need to pay your arse more for being a pain in it.
Reply:You need to get the proper paperwork going. You need to layout a ROI (Return On Investment) for the higher ups if they purchase the proper tools. The problem with companies that have multiple levels of bureaucracy when you just verbally ask for something is that whatever you ask for gets messed up from level to level. Then the person that can make it happen doesn't have the proper info to make a decision. This is made worse if any of the levels have incompetent people, which is usually the case. Reply:I agree with you, a mulit-million dollar comp should have the proper measuring equipment.. I mean hell if one of those parts were machined wrong that would have surpassed the cost of the tool to begin with.... and that's just plane stupid. I know sometimes you really have to make your own tooling which is no different than a welder building his own jig.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:i see the owner every day its a big dollar company but not real big on the grand scheme of things  so its small enough that i see him every day and he will come over and bs with me a little and ask if have noticed any problems with the jobs or work flow and i made comment that yeah if we hadd the proper tooling things would go alot smoother he said nah we cant afford it right now mabey when it picks back up in the 2nd or 3rd quarter so i asked what happens when a job needs tooling we dont have and he said we will give  it to you you can make anything work ....he was blowing smoke up my rear but you get the mentality of it and he is the owner dont get me wrong i love working there 99.9% of the time i have  been there since 16k was a good week where now we are putting out between 200and 300k a week so i know every one i have watched it grow from one room the size of a two car garage to two compleat plants with almost 30 cnc machines so its great 99.9% of the time but its that .01% that makes me want to bring a gun to work lol
Reply:I do not understand how a large company  like that can have everyone buy there own measuring tools.Who calibrates them ?. To me it sounds like every part is not the same size. Are they relying on the 30 CNC machines making every part to the same size ( as if they were the same pieces ) ?.
Reply:Start screwing up parts....Maybe he'll catch on.My name's not Jim....
Reply:nah all the tools wether personal or company owned by  policy must be  calibrated on the shop standards so all measure the same and the point of a cnc is for repeatable acuracy i consistantly run parts with a tol of +/- .0005 every 6 minutes a new one pops out then i load a new part and it begins again 11 hours a day we have work partners in a cell and we randomly spot check each other to make sure no ones measuring  tools have jumped but for the most part everyone has calipers and some torx drivers most people dont last long enough to amass a good colection lol
