Two weeks ago I fitted a 3/16 treadplate floor into my 2472 Sea ark boat.  I was using my Speedglass auto hood set on 9 and my buddy was using a #10 fixed lense on his hood. We both took turns tack welding the floor down while  the other held the floor in place.  The treadplate is very polished and very bright. We were welding at night. The next morning I got up I could not see anything. I had been flashed a couple times without my hood on while holding a corner in place as my buddy tacked.I later in the day went to the eye doctor who said 'yes' you have a sunburn on your eyes from the UV.  He gave me some medicine and I left and went home and layed on the couch. I called my buddy and gave him some crap for flashing me. He told me he woke up at 3am and went to the ER for his eyes as he was flash burned too.My buddy is a Union Sheet metal worker and said what most likely happened was the UV went around our hoods.I spent three days with eye medicine in my eyes and last monday they were good enough to go to Louisiana for a week of gator hunting.Today I went back out and started welding the floor down. I placed my auto hood on 11 and draped a old t shirt over my hood.  The 11 was too dark and I adjusted back to 9 so I could see along with using the t shirt over my hood/head.My question is does the UV go around the hood and what can I do to make sure this does not happen anymore. I have alot of welding to do on the floor this week. I am using a Lincoln Power Mig 300 w/ Python .035 5356 wire if this matters.Thanks.Lincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argon
Reply:I've had UV "ricochet" around in tight quarters. Wearing clear safety glasses under your hood will help.Check the specs on the glasses when it comes to UV...Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:safety glasses under the hood. I also have a 'wrap' that completely blocks all light coming from the back part of the helmet.
Reply:Yup. I use tinted safety glasses under my  number ten shade hood.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Wearing safety glasses with side shields at all times is pretty well industry standard.  It eliminates ALL claims for flash burns to the eyes.  You can't escape from the accusation that you had your safety glasses off when welding and so the employer can refuse the claim to workers compensation and you are just tough out of luck.

Reply:For the past two days I have been draping a old t shirt over the top and back of my hood. Seems to have cured the UV problem as I have been welding the tread plate in and have completed the floor.  No problems.  I wear prescription eye glasses and used my transition pair and all is well.Lincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argon
