With all the "header" threads I thought I would post up a set of headers I did for my friends Formula Vee race car.I took his old headers along with a tubing kit from Jegs to custom build this set for his new 1600cc engine. (Formula Vee typically run a 1200cc engine) I also used some inserts sold by Jegs that help make the joints easier to weld with a MIG gun.I used my Miller DVI welder with CO2/Argon sheild gas.The head flange:The insert and a head flange:Fitting exhaust tubing with the insert:Fitting tubing to a head flange:Routing the tubingThe finished project:"G"Last edited by ConductorX; 01-31-2013 at 08:19 AM.ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
Reply:Nifty little car thereThat's the first i have seen the inserts are they intended to just be an alignment item? What are they made of?
Reply:The inserts are steel. They help align the tubes and close the gap between the pipes. The main intention is to stop the MIG wire from going inside the pipe. I welded some headers before without inserts and the MIG wire nearly blocked the pipe from the misses."G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter

Reply:Nice job!Does that engine have a special ground camshaft so it can run backwards?Since the whole transaxle is turned around looks like it would have 4 reverse gears and 1 forward.Rex
Reply:Those inserts are for alignment. I've used them often when building pipe railing. I don't know what Jegs charges, but they are dirt cheap from railing suppliers like Julius Bloom and Co, J.G. Braun Co, R&B Wagner, etc.
Reply:Nice... I like Formula Vees. Remember seeing one being run locally by a father+son team. Looked like a blast!

Reply:Formula First project, or just fun to rip around in? I hope he let you take it for a spin!I have the now-old-fashioned FV-1200Nice work!Jim
Reply:Thanks Jim, I had two Autodynamics cars with the square tube chassis and a D-3 car. Unfortunately that Formula First car was too small for me to fit. I am too tall for it. My head hit the roll bar without a helmet."G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
Reply:Funny story many years ago I did work for a guy who bought VWs. And I would fix what was wrong with them and he sold them (extra money for me). He bought one with out a motor and trans and then got a motor and trans for somebody else. I assembled and made repairs on it and got it ready to drive. It had 1 forward and 4 reverse I knew just what had happened, the guy come over as he could not believe what I said. Sometime you get a pig in a poke. |
