Hey,, guys! So, Im undertaking a project that requires about 96 feet of Aluminum TIG welds on 1/8" material.Im enjoying it, but HOLY MIXED GAS does it take forever to wire brush this much aluminum.Does anyone have a better way to do this, than with a handheld brush? Ive had bad expierences with flap discs spreading contamination. Any reason not to buy a stainless steel brush for my angle grinder? Can anyone recommend a particular brush? :/[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Scotchbrite pads or discs that fit on a 5" grinder. I get mine at McMaster Carr. Also known as surface conditioning discs. I have a backing pad that fits right on to my DeWalt grinder to accept the discs. The "See Thru" nylon mesh disc, P.N. 46795a65 is about $3.64 per pad. The backing pad with a 5/8 x 11 mount is about $20 to fit your grinder. Reply:I have a stainless brush for my drill and if i have a lot of prep ill use it. I have no idea the brand but it works like a charm. I wipe my aluminum with alcohol to degrease it and then run the brush over it a couple times......Fireman BillHH 210 MVPMM 211 Spoolmate 100Lotas LTP5000D PlasmaOxy/Accet (Victor)Wards AC/DC buzz box30 ton old hyd pressA few brand name toolsA bunch of cheap toolsA wife to worry me and4 dogs to supervise me

Reply:I use very fine wire stainless brushes on a 4and 1/2' grinder with a very LIGHT touch. Just make it turn white, not grey.
Reply:This is cool! Almost like one of my sons asking my advice. I use Radnor (Airgas store brand) it's 4-1/2" I think, 5/8-11 thread 30? gauge twist 302SS. I use one brand or another of the Norton Blaze/ Radnor/Home Depot Avanti?/Sears poly abrasive disc 1/2" thick same grinder. That does it until the pad gets down to the adhesive that holds it on the backer. I think I get adhesive contaminating the AL. The wire brush would poke out an eye without glasses, even so, it is most uncomfortable, like acupuncture. Use a real light touch with both. The brush eats too fast.PS. thanks for some great videos.
Reply:Northern tool has a pretty sweet 4 1/2" air gun style flexible pad kit for grinders, looks like a Chinese star. You can look at the material your grinding on through the wheel, ( it was cool for a week or so but the pads are expensive so I just use standard 5" grinding pads, and it's not the cheap holder that uses glue pads, it uses the grinder chuck to hold pads on)If I remember right you can get almost any style grinding pads, scotch brite/abrasive etc...Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission! |
