similar product pre applied to tubing in this photo:http://www.atlastube.com/epox-z-kote/primed-tubing forgive the newbie question, I haven't done much work with steel but has anyone used weldable primer type coating on steel and tig welded afterwards? I did a search on this forum and did not find a single mention of this technique.I have a lot of low carbon steel bar coming in that is about 1/4x1/2" in size, googling weldable primrer yields a few products. what is the best product I can brush or spray on and then I would cut the metal afterwards and weld it up into a square frame about 16x16" in size?I really hate prepping metal, which is probably why I like aluminum so much no need to paint it.What other techniques can one do to seal up a bunch of steel bar. I asked alro.com if they could galvazine it for me and the sales lady said no. I also read that welding over zinc galvanzied makes nasty fumes bad for you.  I find it hard to believe that bloxide doesn't make nasty fumes too, but I've never used it.I've read that some people blacken the metal with oil and fire, sound more time consuming than primer and paint.I was originally planning to do this:1. Cut down my 20 ft long bar to my needed lengths,2. Stack the bars next to each other, probably about 50 at a time to reduce paint waste.3. masking tape the ends with 1.5" wide tape 4. paint the entire bar except the ends  then repeat on the other 3 sides5. weld up the bars into the square frame I need6. touch up the welded corners with some primer and paint. I thought this was going to be the fastest way, but if I can just prime the whole darn thing and weld over primer that would be even better!
Reply:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...primer.662286/this website guy says bloxide works great. A google search only yields 3m weldable primer coat IIas a competitor. It seems only available as a aerosal spray at a horrendous price.
Reply:Weldable primer has been around for a while. Ive never seen it used in TIG, but MIG and spot welding auto panels is where Ive seen it used a lot.
Reply:I guess my biggest worry is that it doesn't bond well with the metal then my top layer of paint will flake off easily. Are there any other easy coatings to prevent rust on low carbon steel bar? Preferable less than $85 a gallon which is what bloxide costs?
Reply:I just wish I could find a weld through primer locally...GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:WELL I've used about 24oz of the gallon I bought and would really recommend this stuff!put some on my welding table and now the rust is gone, still seems to be conductive enough.it deffinetely works better thin. thick coats scrap off too easily. I will say that I really dislike cleaning and painting steel. I would much rather use aluminum all the time, it's not that much more expensive considering the time it takes to prep steel.....but the strength of steel is still needed sometimes.Last edited by AluminumWelder; 07-31-2014 at 10:29 PM.
Reply:Hardox. Has basically the same coating.  You can weld right threw the primer even with 7018 and no prep. Mig welds threw it too and the spatter doesn't stick just wipes right off
