Reply:lol The customer on this job was great. But, its very common to get a call from someone who thinks they know exactly how long something will take because "they used to do welding in high school". Reply:I know that sticker shock sound exactly. Even if it is a 5 minute job, by the time I figure in what fuel for the trip and possibly to the store for parts runs, plus insurance, phone etc for my business to go to their house and do a small home repair, I almost have to charge 2 hrs of labor or I don't make a single penny. Kind of tough to tell some one that it's $100 in labor plus parts, when you are in their house for less than 15 minutes, even if it took you almost an hour to go run to the store for parts that they didn't see..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Going off on the "it will only take five minutes"A couple of years ago when I was still in Corpus I had a guy call me, wanted me to fix a weld that had cracked on the hand railing on his boat. He told me it was Aluminum and that it should only take about five minutes. I asked him where the boat was located, he told me Port Aransas at the Marina, Mind you this was an hours drive one way if traffic was light from my shop. I explained this to the man, and told him that if he was able to bring his boat to the Corpus Christi Marina which was 5 minutes from my shop, I would not have to charge him travel time. When he asked what travel time would be I told him on all jobs there was a 3 hour minimum, Aluminum welding in the field was 85.00 an hour, and that I expected that it would take me at least three hours to do the repair, plus an hour each direction, so he was looking at a 425.00 minimum + materials/consumables.The man responded with "Why that's highway robbery, that welding job should take you no more than five minutes!" I then had to explain to him that in order to do the repair to his boat in the water, I would have to get my truck close enough to the boat, to get my leads hooked to it, and that I only carried 150 feet of lead, so it was likely that once I was there we would have to move his boat closer to the parking lot, then once rolled out I would have to put down fire blankets to protect his boat, then id have to mask around the plate where the rail tied in where the crack was with masking tape to protect the gel coat, then id have to grind out the damaged joint, then tack the joint, and then unbolt the rail and lift it to weld it out, then once it was cooled I could bolt it back in place, clean everything up, roll up and head home.
