Just one 2lb spool of solid wire through the HH 140 so far. How do I know when to replace the contact tip?Can I run a small file or nail through it if think it is getting buggered up, or is this a no-no since the current passes through the tip to the wire?I have also found it is not good to let go of the wire when installing the spool. Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse. This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. Again.
Reply:As mentioned a lot depends on what causes the need to change tips. If it's plain wear a two pound roll isn't going to be enough to do it, or even a 11 pounder. On the other hand, no more than tips cost for the M10/H10 gun it doesn't matter either. At 50¢ a tip you can run them till they just don't work or swap one with every roll."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Also depends on what you're welding and in what position.. I go through tips like crazy at work..
Reply:LOL. Soooo.......... hows the birds nest thing working out.
Reply:birds nest :: learn how too and what tension to set your pinch rollers and you will not have any issues , as far as the tips , keep a check on your duty cycle and your heat . it all plays a part. everything needs to work as a unit , even your ground makes a difference .. just remember , these are consumables , not only do they weld for you but they also protect your equipment ..

Perspective: I am concerned about the cost of everything.I am new to the mig process and want to learn the proper assesment of my equipment. So part of my question is wear over time and mistakes that cause spatter and burn back, probably over thinking it.So is it fair to say since its a consumable, don't fret about reaming it out: just replace it if I suspect it may be causing a wire feed problem?
Reply:Tips run what, a buck a piece? You probably remove the tip to feed the new spool too, right? One idea would be to just replace the tip when you replace the spool. Sure, it adds a little to the cost, but not a lot.Lincoln 175HD
