So here is a couple of welds on 1/4" plate for first time using our new Miller 180. We had one of the HF specials for $90 and couldn't get it to work on 14ga and were getting very frustrated lots of starting and stopping sputtering etc. We wanted to start doing some things that actually had to hold together... the first is going to be a camping grill rack that will be holding boiling water so want to make sure that it doesn't fall apart on use. So new welder came in today and man what a difference and so I am brave and going to post a picture of two practice runs on the 1/4 first one and then let the comments fall!!!I welcome any advice good start or you suck man whatever will make me better.  Attached Images

Reply:And in the six inches of practice welding did you learn anything?
Reply:Turn it all the way up, burn a hole in that 1/4", then back off a bit. I think Mike is suggesting a little more time spent. Decent start, must have taken about as long as writing this response.SqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A

Reply:I really appreciate his videos.  Bought 2 tig fingers and instructor couldn't believe I was resting my finger on hot metal tigging Wednesday night.  Really need a tig-glove as the school uses air cooled torches and they become nearly impossible to hold as they heat up.Jerry30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press
