I don't know if many of you do heat shrinking of steel we do heaps of it at work on trailers (semi trailers ) many tippers and stock floats and some trailer chassis but you need to know what there made off first we keep in contact with all the major manufacturer's here in oz as we are a major truck smash repair company anyway the point is I made a gadget to save a bit of time in the process and also to keep hands out of cold water in winter  all you need is a 20ltr plastic container with a tap on the bottom connect a hose to it put a air fitting in the top and you have a shrinkomatic  no more cold wet hands  or work gear but still the same control over the cooling process  saves the boss money doesn't have to buy as many bags of rags and no were near the mess Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:Are you doing sort of a water+vapor spray then or straight water?? How much pressure can you use? I've often wondered about using an air syphon. Course for what teeny bit I ever do --------- don't need too many fancy devices setting around but for a full blown shop a bucket and a rag isn't exactly high tech either.

Reply:we use it cool down steel after we have had to heat to get it back in to is originial shape  eg side of stock grates trailer chassis rails tipper's top rails as most of the with tippers when they fall its mainly only one sail that gets damaged but the top rail on the other side will suck in and best way to get to hold is shape when its been pushed out is to shrink it I took some pics of the high tec gadget today but left the disc at work will post them on Thrusday  Attached ImagesCreative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:You can buy wash siphon guns at some auto parts supply stores.  I have also made them up.    The most important thing to remember is not to direct the gun at the red area.  You quench the perimeter of the red.  With a siphon gun you can even take a kink out of one inch plate simply by directing your torch on the convex side while keeping the opposite side cool with the siphon gun.  It needs a helper but does work.  Compressed air and the water can absorb a lot more heat than just wet rags.  http://www.geocities.com/lotechman/siphongun.html
Reply:yeah it works same as a siphon gun only a bit bigger yes we have had problems with new blokes trying to teach them the right way to do it we have had one or two that stuffed the rails on a trailer so a job that should of taken 2-4 hrs ended up taking them 2 days of cutting and grinding to replace what they stuffed not to say the extra cost Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
