I did some welding on 11 gauge galvanized. 3-12 on a flare bevel  groove, with 1/8 6010 wps wants 60-90 amps, I was running at 75. I am welding basically two tracks together approx 14-16" so warping is not an issue. my question is, is that it was not shot down by the welding inspector but by the oshpod inspector. the galvanize on the back side of the metal was burned right where the weld is, and he says it's no good and he called it "heat transfer" I wasn't there but I was told it looked fine to the CWI, I looked in the D1.3 book and didn't come across anything that talks about heat transfer on galvanize. just the galvy was yellowed with that white cotton stuff for lack of a better term, the metal wasn't even blistered. I haven't been on the job for a while but I think I'm going back soon, I'm trying to figure out what and how to educate the oshpod guy or I'm asking on here if I am wrong. any opinions or input would be appreciated. Thanks
Reply:sorry I meant flare v groove
Reply:Is he saying the weld itself is no good, or is the galv finish compromized? If there was no galv contamination into the weld, then the weld is good assuming all other aspects of the weld are ok. Any fluff/ yellowing in the galvanize means it is compromized. Wire it clean, and then spray galv it and walk away..... that is how it is done.A pic might help. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:I wasn't there, but from what I was told is  that according to him you should be able to weld 11 g galvanize without the galvy on the other side of the metal changing, what are you saying about the galvanize contaminating  the weld compromising it?  also to be clear this is just galvanized sheet steel, it's not hot dipped
Reply:D1.3 is not going to have any criteria about corrosion protection of the sheet metal after welding.  You are not going to be able to weld that without some compromising of the coating.  Previous post regarding brushing and an application of a cold galvanizing spray is what I have seen most of the time.   You, your supervisor, or the CWI needs to educate the OSHPD inspector and find a solution that keeps his or her ego unbruised to best mitigate future issues.  Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (

Reply:I'm not sure if my company or the guy who wrote the wps has a pqr for this perticular "curb" , the curb is a manufactured piece so I'm sure a pqr exsist, another problem is some parts of the curb that calls for welding is unweldable unless you add your own metal (gaps too big) but adding anything is hard because oshpd, any other job you would just make it happen, I never been on an oshpd job, I've always been told about them, now I see what everybodys talking about lol.   I'll report back with the outcome
Reply:not too familiar with wps, is a pqr part of it? another question, can you have more than one type of process on a given wps? ex- fcaw or smaw to give you options? and to use either or both?Last edited by tin knocker; 10-14-2012 at 12:15 AM.
Reply:Here is some information I gathered and formated to help people understand the relationship between WPSs, PQRs, and WQTRs.   It is general information and will vary slightly depending on code.GENERAL CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR WELDING CERTIFICATIONThere are three components necessary for certification of personnel.·Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)·Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)·Welder Qualification Test Record (WQTR)·Welding Procedure SpecificationA document providing the required welding variables for a specific application to assure repeatability by properly trained welders.Welding procedures are required when it is necessary to demonstrate that your company has the ability to produce welds possessing the correct mechanical and metallurgical properties.A welding procedure must be qualified in accordance with the requirements of an appropriate welding procedure standard such as ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, API 1104·Procedure Qualification RecordA record of welding variables used to produce an acceptable test weldment and the results of tests conducted on the weldment to qualify a welding procedure specification.·Welder Qualification Test RecordIndividual welders are certified with a qualification test documented in a Welder Qualification Test Record (WQTR) that shows they have the understanding and demonstrated ability to work within the specified WPS.Basic steps1.Produce a welding procedure specification as stated above.2.Weld a test piece in accordance with the requirements of your specification. The joint set up, welding and visual examination of the completed weld should be witnessed by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). The details of the test such as the welding current, pre-heat etc. must be recorded during the test.  3.Once the welding is complete the test piece must be subject to destructive and/or non-destructive examination such as visual, radiography, ultrasound and mechanical tests as defined by the welding procedure standard. This work can be carried out in any laboratory but the CWI may be required to witness the tests and view any radiographs.* 4.If the test is successful the CWI completes the appropriate documents which the CWI stamps, signs, and endorses.5.Once the Welding Procedure Specification is supported by a Procedure Qualification Record then we can then use that WPS as a basis to test the current and future welders of your organization.  The original welder that performed the weld on the PQR is automatically qualified under that WPS.Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (
