I am looking at buying one of the three. I want to use it strictly for stick welding pipe. I hear a lot of talk about how awesome the v350 is but what i want to know is it surpass the v275s in strictly stick welding? I know it has a serious amount of functionality for pulsed mig and stuff like that but I will not be using it for that. I heard someone on the forum say they could dial a v350pro to run like a shorthood, does the v275 have that kind of manipulation? Also toying around with the idea of getting an xmt 304 cc only. Any insight would be helpful and appreciated.
Reply:I have no experience with either Lincoln but I have used the XMT304 and 350 a fair bit. All ran on 550v 3 phase power.I don't believe you can buy a new xmt today that is cc only? cc/cv only.All the xmt's are excellent stick welders. They are great shop pipe welders. Reply:Any solid transformer can stick weld pipe, though both the XMT and the Invertec can lay down quality stick beads. Shelling greenbacks for a fine inverter to only do stick welding is ok, but may be needless in a prudent sense. However, I like the Invertec better (I have only run the V350 Pro when I certified) than the XMT 304 cc/cv (which I own). But as far as dialling in super-sweet stick passes for pipe, it is just not something I have invested time in. You would do better to hear from the pipe weldors aboard.Good luck! Reply:Inverters have completely different arc characteristic than transformers, look at the output graphs in the back of any manual and you will see. I have never use a V350, but I have used the XMT & V275 quite a bit. The XMT has adaptive hot start, which seems to work pretty good, the V275 hot start is all or nothing, and it is just a quick blast. I don't much care for it. The XMT has limited arc force control, basically 2 or 4 settings based on the model. Either set it on 6010 or 7018. The Lincoln gives you infinite adjustment which I like because I like, because you can tailor arc force for big or tight gaps on my root. I like the XMT digital readout for repeatably, the V275 has a very small dial with just over 180 degree swing, so its really hard to make minute adjustments let alone repeat them.The V275 can be had for less than a grand, the XMT will be just under twice as much in the used market.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:I forgot to mention I have two idealarc 250s an a ab 330 running all day and a miller mig welder being ran occassionally. Figured I could shave off some from the electric bill while upgrading equipment. I have a everlast power arc 300 that I got just to see how I like it but that's like my personal machine for just jerking around at home. I like it alot but not sure how it would fair in a commercial environment.

Reply:Yeah I guess I lean towards Lincoln, but my Miller Dynasty made a Tig welder out of me. Trust me this is all machine, the Dynasty does it all, all I have to do is turn it on. If you really need big output current like 250 amps for running large 1/4 inch electrodes, then I go looking on Craig List or Kijiji for a used Lincoln Idealarc AC/DC - renowned for the quality of their arc and a 30% duty cycle at 250 DC amps. Depending on age, around me they are advertised for about $400 for a older round top (rare) to $800 - $1000 for a new model less than 5 years old. |
