And a few other items...So I recently bought a Miller Maxstar 200dx from sqznby here. Machine showed up Wednesday, but I needed to get the plugs to test it out. So far it looks good even though I've only had a chance to stick weld with it for a short time today on 230v due to the rain. I'd hoped it would show up before I did a small railing repair, but of course it shows up the next day after it's done. I have a railing to fab up for a good customer for their tree house, so I'm hoping this job will help cover part of the machine.I'd hoped to get a chance last night to run tig with it at the tech school and use one of their air cooled tig torches off the XMT's, but I didn't get a chance to rig up the 110v adapter yet. School has all the machines hardwired so there's no 230v plug available. I hoped I could borrow one of the spare ones today from the day instructor to try the tig part out over the weekend, but he was out sick. My WP 17 off my Syncrowave won't hook up because the Syncro is gas thru the dinse, and the Maxstar has a separate gas port on the front.  Wonder why on a portable machine like this, Miller didn't go with the gas thru dinse since the Maxstar has the gas solenoid built in?  You'd think they'd set this up like the Syncro where all you have to do is simply unhook the dinse and the torch was completely unhooked.Hour meter comes up at just over 10 hours of use on this baby, so I'm not super worried about not getting a chance to test out the tig functions until next week. When funds come available I'll either get a CK 130, 9 series air cooled for this, or see if it's possible to simply change out the dinse adapter on my current WP 17 and use that instead. I'm thinking about going with a water cooled set up on my Syncro 200 anyways.Next goodie was the Nexgen lens for my Jackson Shadow. Primetime here offered it up for sale a while back, but still needed it, so things kind of sat for a bit. He contacted me to let me know it was finally available, and I decided to just go for it. ( lucky for him before I bought the Maxstar...)  It showed up yesterday just before I left for class. I'll have to see if the adapter that came with it will fit my Shadow hood, or if I need a different hood or adapter... Looking forward to playing with this and comparing it to my current Miller Elite. I was impressed with the Nexgen I had a chance to try from one of the students at the tech school, and liked the color better than the Millers. We'll see how things go when I have a chance to get a few hours under the hood with it. My #10 gold also just showed up this week, for the same hood, so it looks like I'll be swapping out lenses for a bit to try them both. I need to pick up some new clear protective lenses for the Shadow 1st however.Oh and I haven't forgotten you Josh. Sorry things have been a bit odd this summer and a couple of times I thought I might get down that way fell through, luckily before I had a chance to touch base with you. I'll try to Pm you later this weekend and touch base with you again... Attached Images. No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I have a maxstar 150 and I won't use it for root welds on pipe, the arc will quit way to frequently. It may work for hot stringer beads never tried that though. Other than that its awesome, great 7018 action. Real great hot start on 7018 I prefer the maxstar over an xmt for bead quality. But that's just my opinion. I also have a dynasty 200dx haven't tried stick welding with it yet, im sure it will great considering the tig is awesome. good luck with the machine, hurt the bank buying it but worth every penny!
Reply:I know Steve here ( 7A749) among others has commented that his Maxstar 150 won't run 6010 IIRC. Tozzi has commented that he hated running 6010 from a Maxstar 150. I know there have been numerous others that have commented on this in the past here as well. From  one thread on Millers site about issues with the Maxstar 150 and 6010... by Miller Brad,The reason that 6010 does not work really well with that machine is that the valid arc condition needed for stick welding needs to be within a certain voltage range, which is specific to the hardware/software of the machine. We basically created this machine with intentions of being a great TIG machine and a good stick machine. Certain changes to hardware/software that might make this machine run 6010 better, effect the TIG arc too much, which was not something that we were willing to sacrifice. This is why when the arc length on a 6010 electrode changes to a longer arc length you are having outages. The voltage that this electrode burns at is higher (outside of this "valid arc" range) than some other electrodes, and the machine itself does not have the capability of producing the inductance necessary to effectively burn a 6010 electrode like some of the bigger machines do. All of the machines that I know of that fit within this size range have issues with this same thing. 6010 is kind of a worst case scenario for a welding machine, and is not typically something that we recommend for use with this machine. Not because it will hurt the machine, cause it will not. Just cause it does not work really well due to outages. 1/8" diameter 6011 will not have this same problem and will run flawless.

Reply:Ok, off the 6010 and on to something else...You mentioned running it off a genny.  I wouldn't.  Gennys output tends to be rather inconsistent, with dirty sinewaves, ESPECIALLY when a larrge load is applied quickly, like striking an arc.You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:I'm so glad I stumbled on this thread. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was going on with my 161STL. Thanks again everyone.
