Reply:Why would you ever go downhill on pipe? My instructor said you always weld UPhill.

Reply:If your practicing downhill on pipe start with 6010 5p or 6010 5p+. I prefer 5p+ for my stringer and then use it for the hotpass,fillers,and cap. After you master this rod try running 5p+ for your root and then 8010g (70+) for your hotpass,filler,and cap. 70+ welds very similar to 6010 and is the rod of choice for pipeline and compressor station work. After you master the 5p+& 8010, try using 7010g or 7010hyp for your fill and caps. This rod is also a common rod used for downhill pipe welding. Hope that helps. Always remember a GOOD welder can weld uphill,downhill,sideways,crammed up in a ditch or piperack. Try to challenge yourself after you fell confident with booth welding. Also tig is worth it weight in gold. Learn it as well.

Reply:To my knowledge downhill (downhand) is prohibited on structure. But for pipe welding procedure can be uphill or downhill depending on the wps specified to the project. I've been on jobs where both downhill and uphill were required for different process pipe. 7018 should not be ran downhill at any time on coded items. And yes Kevin you can stack iron just as fast or even faster with 7010 and or 8010 by using bigger electrode diameter such as 3/16 or 5mm. It takes alot if practice to learn downhill just like it does with uphill. Pipeline is welded downhill for speed and productivity.

Reply:6011 works real good on dc. I'm out of 6010 at the moment. And brush up on uphill, it's just like downhill, only totally different.City of L.A. Reply:Start off with a small 6010 ..... Like a 1/8 ...just to get a fill for running downhill. Also try running some vertical down t joints then break the joint and see if you penetrated the corner then move on to some butts or pipe. I run 6010 5p 7/32 downhill all day every day .....no problemo....

Reply:change one number and find a E7048 if its too hard. iv heard that the 7018 (where 1 means all positions) is not best for downhill and the 4 in 7048 means downhill..or mig itTurn 'em and Burn 'em

Reply:I worked in the recycling industry for a short period of time welding a lot of 1/8 steel and smaller. If you run hot and move quickly with a side to side movement you can down hand 7018. The slag should fall like candle wax. But, It only works because of the thickness of the parent metal anything structural should be welding vertically.
