Project that I have finally started on after several years of my dad and I talking about it. Still have a ways to go but its coming together. Between work, and a 3 month old its had to find time to work on it. the last pic is a fix I had to do after I cut my tubing to short and had to add six inches to it. Probably wouldnt have happened but there were some door to door sale man trying to sell my wife some kind of cleaner and kept asking me questions while I was trying to read the measurement I took off of or other hay lift. Also the machine shop I used slowed me down after I took the shaft to the to have them cut it down to fit the bearings and the collar for the sprocket. The problem was once they had every thing cut down the cut it off the rest of the shaft so they had to redo it and leave it attached. Please disregard the mess I usaully dont work in conditions like this just havent had time to clean up a bit but i will be doing that before i start on it again.Last edited by JDT4430; 01-13-2013 at 01:02 AM.JamesMillermatic 252 in the shopMiller Bobcat on a trailer for the feild repairs around the ranch.Mostly weld on equipment or pens around the ranch.
Reply:Looks good. Looks very similar to one of Tractorbynet, have you seen it?http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/p...-unroller.htmlMost of the commercial unrollers grab the bail like a roll of paper towels and just uses the ground speed to unroll. I wonder how yours will compare. I like things with motors. Can't wait to see it in action.
Reply:Yes I have seen that one and I actually based mine off of it. Our nieghbor has one also but he made his so that the main spear is stationary and the three small spears are what rotate the bale. A few years ago i converted a carpet grass unroller to unroll bales like the ones you are talking about that clamp the bale but its not made heavy enough to support the bale during transport so we use the tractor with a spear on the front and carry it to the pasture with it then cut the stings then set it down and back up to it and clamp it and unroll. The other problem with this is by the time you can cut the strings and set it down the cows are all around it and it is a pain to back up to. Once i'm done with this one I plan to remodify the clamp one so that it is strong enough to carry a bale.JamesMillermatic 252 in the shopMiller Bobcat on a trailer for the feild repairs around the ranch.Mostly weld on equipment or pens around the ranch.
Reply:These also look very well built but it also has a pretty price tag.http://kerrbilt.com/page/4648_2&productID=3614&JamesMillermatic 252 in the shopMiller Bobcat on a trailer for the feild repairs around the ranch.Mostly weld on equipment or pens around the ranch.
Reply:Never seen one operate in this manner - always been ones built as Forhire discribed , keep us posted and also some working shots, seems to be a good design.
Reply:Finallygot some time to get back in the shop and make some more head way. Got the motor mounted, the three point mounting tabs welded on, and got the three small spears cut and welded on. Since the machine shop that cut the spear down to fit the bearings did not cut the threads off of the shaft (old valve steam my dad picked up at work) I pulled it back out so my dad could take it to work and get it done. Reply:Ours would never unroll like that.  Dad liked a tight bale & we would have to cut them to get the hay out of the bale.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Great job James! We send all of our feed bales through a bale processor, but bed our freshening pens with round bales. We've been unrolling them by hand for the past 10 years! I might copy your design for a future project - I have a working hydraulic motor on a junk JD 3960 harvester (spout control).
