I'm sure the title will gain some attention......Here is the story........A co-worker of mine is an avid Kayak..... fishing..... and biking type guy.... He's 30.... newly married... with more degrees than I can count........ a smart guy......... and an outdoor adventurer.....He bought a trailer from some guy who had fashioned it to carry a kayak.......Some Tractor Supply type rig with a "custom" Kayak harness on it.....The pluses: The design is solid..... well thought out.... functional......The minus: The welds are the bad..... flux core on top of paint........ and poor penetration.....My job: fix it and make it the way Jason wants it to work..... using the saddles from his Yakima rack.......Nothing structural.... not doing anything to the trailer design......... just putting on a better welded rack.....It will take me a couple Saturdays to get it the way he wants it.... I'll post those pics here when I get it done.....Here are welds I was given to work with last Friday........ Attached ImagesPrecision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Finally! a trailer repair thread that doesn't make my heart stop when I see who the OP is. Fex, you got this.honestly surprised that rack is still on the trailer. as those plops couldn't be more than a couple tacks here and there. Keep the pictures coming. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Those little trailers are bolted together. You might as well weld the pieces together to make it one solid trailer. I've had to do several for people as the bolts are crap and the little trailers just start to come apart.Your more than welcome to come use the shop and do it here if you don't have the room. I will be out of the shop for any big jobs as I have 3 buildings in a row to do. I'm only about 25 miles from Austin.

Reply:that must be the traier that transports the kayaks to s**t creeck without the paddles.  It's scary, tailers don't get any inspection at all in Ca, you just apply for a license. We run a rec area and rebuild trailers a lot that make it here and instantly disengrate into their basic elements.

Reply:Starting last night..... and all day today........ I got the chance to get deeper into this thing.......I took a bunch of pics.... and some video (still editing)........ so the next few posts might be pic heavy....Ok..... first..... I starting taking apart the uprights.... the Kayak holding parts that the guy welded together.....First... the good part........ both front and back were exactly alike... this means the "fabricator", while not a welder...... did have a good eye on measurement... since both pieces were identical....Second.... the bad part....... This metal is 3/32 (13 gauge) with the rust.... it is actually 14 gauge steel all cleaned up......... and there was not a single piece that had any penetration..... not a single piece...Here are a couple pics to show you what I mean....... Reply:So.... last night.... I pulled the little trailer into the garage so that I could take the wood top off.......The thing is so small that I suddenly felt like I had a large "shop" to work in......Then today...... Ava did me a huge favor by waking up at 7:30am (she usually waits until 9:30 on Saturday.... my only day to work in the garage..... I was grateful today)...... I was able to get started nice and early........I was grinding away before my neighbors knew what hit them........Notice the ease of removal of the bad welds.......I spent lots of time grinding the welds down though......PICS....... Reply:After I got all of the sockets off of the trailer..... you know.... the parts that the uprights fit into...... I cleaned them up..... and decided to put bases on them so that it would be easier to put the new uprights into them by one person......I found some scrap that was larger than the "sockets"......I used it an opportunity to dial in my settings.... since i knew I was grinding these down anyway......3/32" filler at 100 amps with about half peddle seemed about right..... eventually......PICS...... Reply:Silly question, but you did drill drain holes in the plates you welded on right? While tig practice is great, once you ground down those welds, you really don't have much weld left to hold the plates in with. Reply:Flexal -While you have the trailer torn apart go ahead and do your friend a favor and lay some weld to hold the trailer together.  I would hate to have the trailer fall apart with all the work you have put into the carrier. I have a smaller version of the same HF trailer that I use to haul the trash to the end of the driveway, its not a bad trailer for the money but it helped the rigidity greatly when I welded everything together instead of relying on the bolted connections.Andy-------------------------Miller Bobcat 250 / Dynasty 200DXHobart HH 140Hypertherm PowerMax 380Kalamazoo 8C BandsawHowron Bender / Hossfeld #2 Bender
