Bandsaw Width interchange

I have an old Johnson horizontal bandsaw and it is stamped on the side to use 93" 5/8in. wide blades.  Generally can I use a slightly different width, like 1/2 or 3/4in. wide, which are more common?Thanks in advanceMark

Reply:Metalworking bandsaw blades need to have the teeth hang off the edge of the wheels. Usually the wheels will have step turned into them, to hold the blade.Otherwise the teeth get worn off before they can even cut anything.So probably if you put a 1/2" blade on it, it will just wreck the blade.The other adjustment would be the guides- some bandsaws have guides that are adjustable for different sizes of blades- some dont.Not sure about those Johnsons- newer chinese ones have 3 bearings for top and 3 for bottom, each separately adjustable.Generally speaking, most horizontal metalworking bandsaws only take one size of blade- unlike woodworking verticals, which have rubber wheels and can take many sizes.You can order bi-metal blades made to order in just about any size from MSC and Mcmaster Carr.
