OK I have 3 grinders. A 5" Makita 9amp, a 4-1/2" Bosch 8amp, and a 5" Harbor Freight (5.5 amp I think). I was thinking of having one for grinding, onewith a cutoff wheel and one with fluted sanding disc or wire cup. What do you guys prefer. Also which grinder for which application . Thanks snoboy
Reply:I use my big grinder with 30 grit pads to quickly remove rust and scale and the 4.5 for cutting and wire brushing.
Reply:Roger-that gimpyrob! So a 5" 30 grit on the Makita. Which operation needs more power, wire brushing or cutoff wheel? Probably I'll leave the Bosch setup for cutting and the HF for wirebrushing/sanding. You agree?snoboy
Reply:i dont use my 4.5 for cutting but have them set up with 1/4" disk for realy thick removal, flap disks for most useagees, wire wheel for quick clean and a wire cup for a lil heavyer than the wheel, the wire cup seems the hardest on the grinders, i burned up a few B&D's and started getting portacables 7.? amps and beter built. i like the PC much better.not shore if that helps ?? but the flap disks get the most use as they work well on almost every thing. if you have not tryed them you realy should. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Sorry it took so long to get back, work sucked this week. I found that the 30 grit really grabs and bogs down the big grider when I "aggressivly"(sp?) sand. The 4.5 inch dewalt I have used for more cutting and wirewheeling than I care to think about. My hands go numb with the memories! I would say that cutting metal and wire brushing are about the same(power requirement wise) for me cause I use the plasma or bandsaw for big stuff. Its like dad says when we shoot pool, "don't do what I'd do, do what you are comfortable with." Some experimenting is always good. Just remember to wear at least eye protection if not a face shield(which I prefer) while using the grinders. Cutting blades shatter and wires get flung out of the cups at 10,000rpm!
Reply:yep you realy need a full face shield for cutting and wire wheels and the lether aprin is a must also as far as im concerned, you end up feeling like you were rapeing a porcupien if ya dont thouse lil metal brush wires go right threw cloth.. ya i know chicks dig scars. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time. |
