I am welding some stainless pipe and thought a trailing gas shield would be perfect. I then checked them out and saw how expensive they are. In my pursuit of rainbow welds I figured one would be great. So the question is, has anyone built their own trailing gas shield? I have seen one on the Mig UK forum, but nothing here. Don't make me be the pioneer...

Reply:Yes, connect a small length of tig gas hose and Y it with a valve into your flowmeter. Clamp it to the back side of your torch or gun depending on the direction your travel. Use the Valve on the Y to controll the flow.  Crude but works.
Reply:Perhaps he is talking about mixing his own gas?  If so,  there are some thread on this forum.  What is "trailing" gas?  Yeah guess we were typing at the same time.
Reply:For a moment I was thinking Insaneride was trying to thread-jack here. Then I saw tapwelder and figured I might not have been clear. Without being a jerk, I did a quick google on "trailing gas shield" and the first three results explain it better than I can. So here they are:http://www.pwt-online.com/products/prodGSD.htmhttp://huntingdonfusion.com/en/produ...g-shields.htmlhttp://www.trailingshields.com/weldbay: Do you use anything to filter the Argon or just pump it right out the tube? I have a DIY purge setup with regulator that I will test with. On one of Ron Covells DVDs (Advanced TIG Welding) one of his guests explains the trialing shields that he has made. He uses them for Titanium and they are just small sheetmetal boxes (no longer than 1.5 inches) that clip under the torch. They have a stainless mesh screen with copper wool inside the little "box". Argon goes in the top. Seems straight forward to make, and I was thinking someone around here would have made one.Last edited by vortsp; 10-30-2012 at 11:23 PM.
Reply:You don't need one to make "rainbow welds'"

Reply:Wasnt trying to jack but I did misunderstand. Please disregard my entry. time to go weld something. Good day
Reply:I have made and used them for large titanium pipe, same as one of the above descriptions, out of thin sheet metal.  Mine use the gas from the torch, you just increase the flow cause some is diverted as trailing gas.  The hootis has a hole in it that you put the cup into.  Don't have any pics at the moment, but will look around next time I'm in the states.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:The pipewelding instructor I worked with made a couple. He put some stainless steel wool from a kitchen scrub pad in them to disperse the gas. Not much to them really. We used some scrap stainless sheet and a piece of mild steel truck fuel line over which we shoved the argon hose.Copy the pretty commercial ones as to general shape and work with what ya got.
