I currently work very early in the morning and head to college right after work. I don't have time to run home and just leave my hood in the truck. It's probably a silly question but do you guys think the constant extreme heat is causing damage to my hood? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I actually make a point of leaving my hood on the front passenger seat on days I have class at night. That way I know the solar cell charges the hood. If it's locked up in the side box in the dark, I've found on a few occasions the hood needs to charge up because the batteries are dead. ( good reason to make sure I've always got a spare  fixed shade hood as well as spare batteries.)That said in really hot temps I usually crack the windows so the heat doesn't kill ME at the end of the day. I also don't leave the hood out if I'm in a neighborhood that might be questionable..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I leave my digital elite in it's bag on the back seat. That way it gets some light but not the pounding sun through the windshield. I was a little concerned about leaving the PAPR in the truck due to the lithium ion batteries but it has been there for a week wih no problems. The inside of the cab gets 110+ deg in the Florida sun and nothing has gone boom yet.Sent from my GT-P3113 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:I would think it would be bad to leave it in a extremely hot or cold vehicle. I assume we are talking about an auto darkening helmet.

Reply:You could check the spec's on your hood.  Miller's are on page 7 of this document:  https://www.millerwelds.com/om/o256476a_mil.pdf  Both storage and operating temperature ranges are shown.Tim
Reply:I don't leave my hood in my car unless I have no other choice, in which case I put it in the trunk. Even on hot days, the trunk will stay relatively cool.I have noticed that with my miller digital performance hood, even if I have "powered down" the hood, it will turn back on if subjected to bright enough light. The sun ALWAYS turns the hood on. This makes me worry that being in the sun might end up draining the battery as a result of the hood being on for so long.  Also, I turn the sensitivity to the least sensitive setting and sometimes put it on grind mode before putting it away, so that even if it does turn on while in the bag (this does happen often) hopefully it will not use up extra energy darkening the lens.Aspiring Top-Notch WeldorLooking for work/experience in Eastern Massachussetts
Reply:The solar cells on a welding helmet do not recharge the batteries the batteries and welding helmets are typically lithium ion button cells or AAA standard batteries isn't rechargeable batteries the solar cells actually activate the polarizing film in the class to make up a darker leaving in your hood in the sun will just drain the batteries cause it to fail early if you can leave in your car you should put in the trunk

Reply:My Hobart Hood specifically states it will charge up batteries for a short time. It also states in case of dead batteries or slow reaction time, to leave it in the light for a bit to "re energize" the hood properly.

Reply:Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for all of the input. I'm gonna check the specs out and see if it says anything. I guess I'm just super cautious about it because I'm a broke student and I spent my life savings on that thing. LolSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Originally Posted by GambleHe is correct. On most helmets the solar cell does NOT recharge he batteries. Most good helmets use a 2150 battery which is not rechargeable. The way it works is the batteries are what will initially darken your helmet then the solar cell takes over to save the battery life.

Reply:90% of the time I have a welding helmet in my vehicle, hot or cold, never a problem.  Of course they are all either speedglass or huntsman not cheap HF ones.  So your mileage may vary.
Reply:I think it depends on where you live. I would not leave it in the car unprotected if I lived in Arizona or Florida in the summer time. If you have something like 120 F outside in the shade, it's going to be extremely hot inside the car in the sun.
Reply:Yeah I live in Wichita Kansas. I guess I'll just have to wear it in class.....Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Just bring it to class, it will be a conversation starter!
