When was the last time some one asked you to turn a drain cover from solid brass for their new shower? Or how about a wheel bolt for their brass cannon? Not very often I imagine. I figured I'd upload a few photos of some stuff I just finished.First the cannon! It was missing a wheel bolt. Hand made in the 40's or 50's from brass. The customer supplied the brass which actually appeared to be a bronze pin out of a rear end. Here are the build photos. The cannon will be in the next post. The hole in the bolt was my mistake. I assumed it was an oil passage. Turned out if I would have faced off another 1/8th of an inch it would have been eliminated. Bronze isn't cheap so I was trying to use as little as possible. I should have checked it with a wire. Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 03-10-2013 at 03:07 AM.
Reply:Here are the pictures with the part installed. The customer was very happy. Sorry about the poor pictures... I was most interested in the breach design... I was taking notes in case I decide to build myself one sometime. Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 03-10-2013 at 03:08 AM.
Reply:Today I finished a custom shower drain for a customer. Not your typical home depot special when it calls for $65 worth of brass and a bunch of time. Turned out nice. The customer will be polishing it. A few weeks ago I cranked out the blank. The customer took it home and tested the fit. It fit prefect.  Yesterday he stopped by and laid out the design. He wanted 6 side holes and 1/8" slots so no rings go down the drain. So this morning I pounded out the code and cut it this afternoon. I think he'll like it. One requirement was that it look like a drain. What do you think? My wife thought it was pretty neat. Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 03-10-2013 at 03:08 AM.
Reply:Both pieces turned out great. I really like the drain cover and was wondering if you did that manually or was there a little CNC going on there. Besides all of the stops and starts on those grooves, I see at least one tool change. That will look awesome once it is polished.
Reply:Awsome work, both jobs came great!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:couple questions.....first what kind of lathe are you running? looks like an sl/nl style slant bed with soft jaws i was amazed with soft jaws when i first started in cnc...any way next question it looks like you did the oblong radiused drain holes with an .125 end mill how did you chamfer it? was a ball end mill or did you use a minimaster style tool? looks good though came out nice

Reply:Yeah I use the probe when ever posibble we have the mapps but since our shop is so big we have actual programmers sitting in an office hammering out code so there's only a couple of us that use it and then its mostly for one piece fixtureing or shaping jaws if they need to clamp on several surfaces or what have you....and I came off a nl3000 y when they had me setup the dura and I was so used to live tooling and a working probe and the interlock being bypassed and other idiocyincracys of the "broke in" machine it just felt cumbersome to set up......then I ran the Samsung

Reply:Nice toys you got there
Reply:Yeah cam is nice.....we actually have programmers that are horibble with just strait g-code live tools are nice but the tools are prety expensive and hallways make sure you orient the quills properly when putting them in or it will cost you about 35k in damage (please don't ask how I know that lol) I really like the live tools it makes things nice especially if features on the part have to be timed up

Reply:Crashes happen.....I slung a part out yesterday lol  ...do you single block through your setups with the rapid turned down to like 25%? Personally I atleast single block up to the part just to be sure my z and x are correct even using the probe to set geometry weird things sometimes happen working in a production driven shop I have seen lots and lots of bad things happen luckily never any injuries but our shop moto printed on our shirts used to be "home of violent machining" lol

Reply:Dont feel bad, I have crashed a multi million dollar 5 axis integrex. Kind of, I was proving out a new tool paths in an already proven program.. Got to a part that I thought was good to run, turned my back on it and bang! Bridge of the machine (where the spindle is) hit the part. Thank god I didnt hit the spindle... knocked the machine all out of wack .. It got re squared and is running good now, I am making parts on it I love that shower drain you made, it is awesome!HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
