spray arc in the gma process

Good day folks hope all is well for ya!For those guys out there with field experience or other, I was pondering  the  idea of using the AWS D1.1 certification in spray transfer GMA using 92% 8% for a "kind of "prequalifying cert / basic cert. Some ideas here...... not sure if I'm being clear.   I'm trying to think of a benchmark or cornerstone qualification.  See I view achieving the spray technique ( this sounds corny) as the crown jewel in Mig transfers. A good mig weldor.. he would be familiar with it. Most folks have the short circuit xfer down and globular and such. I just felt this would sort of prequalify those in a sense.  If I'm going to hire more help and invest time and money this was just one of the ideas I thinking. Let me know your thoughts. weld it like you own it
Reply:I not familiar with the AWS code to comment directly.  It is only in the last few years that we have any treatment of spray transfer in the Canadian code.  Generally before you had to qualify all spray transfer procedures for the shop.  I believe now there are some prequalified spray transfer/hard wire joints.  Spray transfer is the only way to weld if you are inside in a shop doing flat and horizontal.  Any other way is just not economical in time.  In the shop I work in all our tests are downhand spray with metal core which qualified as the equivalent to flux core until a few years ago.  Anyone who can do out of position hard wire welding will catch on to spray in seconds.  Setting the machine maybe will take minutes to learn.

I'm probably making more out of it.   Good point about folks who can do out of position welding will catch on.  Now..  My procedure spec sheet does require vert up.  Its really tough and setting the machine can be tricky too.  Maybe I need to reconsider my procedure sheet.     Hey thanks for you input. weld it like you own it
