Practicing for a 5g pipe test.6" sch 40 mild steel.Im downhill welding the root which turns out ok using 1/8 6010 rod at around 75 amps, but im thinking i should turn down the amps,as the keyhole can be a little hard to control at times.I didnt know which rod to use for the hotpasss,6010 or 7018.I decided to go uphill with a weave with the 7018 and burned a hole in my root.Should i run two small stringers uphill with 7018 for the hotpass?6010?Uphill,downhill,stringers,weave?The bevel is not that wide and can be covered with two stringers for the cover pass.
Reply:Which rod to hotpass with depends on where you're testing. Sometimes they require a 7018 hp, sometimes they will let you decide. I always run a 6010 downhill hp if they let me.If you have to do 7018, don't grind the root as much.
Reply:If this is your option you should do what your most comfortable with. Usually if your down hilling the root you will down hill the rest out with a 6010. You could hot pass down hill with a 6010 but make sure your burning out wagon tracks and watch the bottom. I tend to long arc the bottom a little bit on the hot pass. Otherwise listen to Timmy and run up hill with a 7018 and dont grind your bead too much. Just get the tracks out. Good luck
Reply:Iver never run a hot pass with a 7018 before have to try that out today. Uphill ive always run 6010 at bout 100 amps using whip. |
