Guys and ladies;I was straightening my rods up and came across a large (5 lbs.) quantity of this unknown rod.  The coating in brown or dirty red and there are no marks that I can find in it.  It is 1/8" and the core is almost black.  I thought maybe it is for cast iron.  Any help appreciated.
Reply:Looks like the CHEAP 7018 my welding class was using.  School got it for $1 a pound in bulk.  Brand unknown and I don't have any idea how to assess it, tho others here will.30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press
Reply:It's rusty so almost certainly steel. By how thin the coating is I would guess 6010 or 6011. I would scrap them.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Looks like 6012 or 6013.  EST usually has a dark grey (darker than 7018) coating.  N55 and N99 are darker grey than 7018, but lighter than EST.

Reply:Old 7014 or 6013.Throw them as far as you can, then run out there and pick them up, and throw them again.Done.
Reply:Put them in the scrap box for the next trip to the scrapper.  Little bit of luck you might get enough for 1/2 a beer.....Measure with a micrometre, mark with chalk,  cut with a torch.Never force anything...just get a bigger hammer.RoyOld Airco buzz box approx 1974Lincoln mig pack 15Lincoln 175 square wave1954 9" south bend lathe

Reply:See how they weld before you throw them out. They could still be OK for mild steel

Reply:Keep them and Weld mild steel(Farmer Repairs) with them. Can't see wasting something that could be useful in practicing beads with! Unless of course you have Gobs of money and can write it off on your Taxes.
Reply:Mild steel is just about all I weld, so I will try them with some of my scrap pieces.  They didn't cost me anything, so if I get a use from them ++
Reply:Didn't take any pictures, but ran beads on flat steel 3" square tub.  good penetration, mild splatter.  price was right, I'll use them
Reply:Save them for when your brother in law comes over.
