I was playing with odds and ends I picked up in a box of rusty tools and decided to use them to get more practice in welding. Yes... they will be cleaned before they're welded.  The beginnings of an owl can be seen in the photo. I'm stumped for feet to weld onto a piece of rebar and then onto the "perch" in the photo. I thought about using a section of heavy duty spring but that didn't seem quite right.----Any suggestions for feet please?MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Feet material...1. 3/8 rod. Bent or otherwise2. Bolts, use nuts as joints either welded between or on a bend.3. Cut off tips of the horse shoes and use them4. heat the washers, bend them over and use them as feet. 5. Spark plugs as legs with fork heads as the feet. ...Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler

Reply:Railroad spikes?
Reply:Ohhhhh.... thank you. I never thought of using old forks and I read a few threads here that had photos of little projects fabricated with flatware and I kid you not.... I bought an old box of flatware having no clue what I could do with it at the time. I have just what I need and didn't even realize it and I wouldn't need any heat to bend them either. Wonderful fix!!!--Bigger ohhhhhhh.... after I cut off the tines, I could use the handles to make a dragonfly garden stake I've had my eye on for a while, http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/73...3d47817c2d.jpg. --I haven't used RR spikes for anything but.... I'd like to.  I don't have any.... yet... give me a year or so and I will get my grubby little hands on some. They'd make a great body to a dragonfly with the spike being the head.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Pm me your address. I think I have a few bent RR spikes in the shop you can have. Reply:Thank you so very much. I've actually asked girlfriends to start looking for those for me. If you do find them, I'd like to send one back to you with "wings" and a rebar stake attached... by me.  You must promise not to look too closely at any of my welds yet for at least a year. I know you are a welding instructor and I know I sometimes go too fast or too slow or I'm too far or too close or need more amps. I'm getting the hang of it... slowly but surely. I've got a few hours to my credit. Another 99 of practice before the critiquing can begin though.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I'd just cut the legs off of a real owl and glue them on.  That will show people how dedicated to your art you can be.OK, seriously, I like the forks idea. No leg showing though. Just use the tines and the portion that connects them. What do you call that part of a fork anyway? Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:I just copied BucketObolts horse shoe owl exactly and used wire. I've made about a dozen of these and gave them away to gardeners I know. They have gone over wonderfully. Attached Images

Reply:The feet are made from pieces of wire off a bundle of metal I got in. Look for a BucketObolts thread on the owls he made. He has also made some bad *** butterflies. He has a vivid imagination. I just wait until he comes up with stuff and copy his.

Reply:I did find RR spikes along the tracks and gathered quite a few BEFORE I found out it was illegal to do that. Oopsie.  --Love the branch the owl is welded to.... that would make a great addition to a garden!!!!--The tines of forks worked wonderfully for the feet!!! I decided against cleaning it up because.... I liked the look of the rust. This was pretty much all done by "eye".... no squaring up at all and just tacking. What fun!!! --MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Ok I have to get in to this art work stuff when I finish my horse shoe bridge !!!
Reply:IMO,Quit worrying about what "legal" and what is not!If you keep it hush/hush what you are doing walking the Tracks, no one would know you are picking them up.Walk the Dog and carry a couple of plastic bags with one inside the other, put dog poop in one and if questioned, show them that. Some crackhead will pick up the plates and spikes to sell if you don't snag them for Art.My 2 Cents!BTW,I'll save out another handful of washers for you!The Owl looks nice!

Reply:Lumpy G> Do it!!! It's a blast!!! Mine is going to work with my husband... he overheard me talking to a friend about who to give it to and piped up and said it wasn't going to anyone... except him. He liked it so much he's appropriating it for his desk. --drujinin> Ha ha ha.... problem is I parked my car right by the RR tracks because I really didn't know the fine was like $1,000 and there are gas stations at the next corner up where state and county cops stop in for coffee and to use the restrooms. Youknowwho would get past the fine getting his wife out of hock but he'd have a heart attack if my name ended up in the police blotter. I can't.... honestly.... I can't ever again now that I know.... I'd make such a bad criminal.... I'd be out on the tracks with one of the dogs trying to act all innocent and.... I'd get so flustered I'd hand the cop the wrong baggie. And yours truly told me recycling bins were a no no too. I'll take your washers.... gimmie the rustiest ones please!!!!  --Notsooldordum> When I was repairing my tomato cages.... I did just that... used excessive stick out. I'm always hitting that darn trigger and entire lengths of it shoots out!!!adding something...gxbxc> Ohhhh..... Reply:Equilibrium,You know that the only purpose for feet is to keep your legs from fraying at the ends.(That came from a pre-Monty Python movie that had many of the same players and more.  Google "The Ruttles".  If your hubbie likes Monty Python, he will bust a gut watching that.)"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:BD1> It's certainly going to make for an interesting conversation piece on his desk. His says his big gripe is "stuff". Here we are trying to get rid of "stuff" so we can move into a 1 story home that's easier to maintain and... I'm hauling "stuff" back in. Our garage has definitely become an obstacle course even with me stashing "stuff" youknowwhere. --DSW> I read your weed comment and it wasn't quite registering at 1st (slaps self up side of head) but... it registered instantly with my husband and he laughed out loud. --Insaneride> Thank you. I'd found photos of welded owls online months ago and started collecting pieces since I knew I wanted to try one. It was fun. I really got a kick out of doing something where you just eyeball it and tack. --Notsooldordum> Uh huh... yes... he's a Monte Python fan. He's standing here by me reading right now.... he says he's never heard of "The Ruttles" before.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act.
