Reply:Doood, one & a half high - hurts... Not been having the best week myself so... At least you didn't take it out undersize on the bore, that's when you really get dogged.Do you open that direct hardening material a little before welding or just live with it's attitude?Matt

Reply:I'd like to know how it machines zap. I did a quick calculation of carbon equivalent on 4150 and came up with .89.  So I looked up the end quench data (Jominy end quench - water) and it says "whup azz hard" at the little silvery band next to your weld. I included the charts & zoomed for effect. The top line is 65 Rockwell C scale.Looks like a 1" 4150 bar water quenched from 1550 ought to get 65Rc hard 3/8" deep... BUBBA! It oughta squeel a little when you go to chamfer it.   The sh!ts nastier than 4340!Matt Attached Images

Reply:Cool! Looks to be around a 6"ish bore @ 300RPM = 470+ feet per minute. With good carbide it goes well at those speeds, even better when you get a continuous chip. That's real good welding on touchy stuff!Edge & bottom corner look really good too. Nice Job! Matt

Reply:Last place I worked at had the inspection room @ 72 degrees at all times..But it did not make any sense to me then or now if the shop is cold in winter or boiling hot in the summer and the parts are manufactured in those temps.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:so here is the thing about gaugeing or qa "labs" .....i dont work for nasa if it is 5.0065 at 50 degrees its going to be the same at 100 ok mabey it will be 5.0066 it still dosent make sense other than keeping condensation from forming on the gageing equipment other than that i see no point in a clean room for inspection ....with the exception of a few exotic alloys some times they de stress and move but its not the temp doing it its the material1979 sa 200victor 100several bfh's several pitbulls (for holding down the floor)

Reply:Hey all,Long time reader first time poster....On the subject of temperature controlled QC rooms, I see it all the time in different plants I go into.  Im going to have to disagree with 'texasredneck' on this one. A 50deg temp change will yield will a thermal growth closer to 0.0016" in a part 5.0065" leaving you with a final size of 5.0081".1" of steel will grow 0.00000645" for every degree of increase in temperature (Fahrenheit).  Depending on the application that can be quiet critical.  Or maybe I'm reading this wrong and I might also suck at math.....Cheers

Reply:I know exhaust especially ss exhaust on a car can grow over an inch when heated. This has to be taken into consideration when building the exhaust so it clears everything and doesn't rattle (contact something) when it heats up.
