Hey everyone, I am sure that ya'll are getting tired of these welding trailers but I would really appreciate feedback. So I got this 4x7 trailer from my cousin because he got tired of it and I believe he was going to put a roof on it not sure for what I want to know what people would do for designs on this trailer and I plan on putting the welder and some stuff to be used on the ranch on here. Thanks. Attached Images

Reply:What kind of welder are you planning to put on there?Whenever I load a trailer, I put the heaver+delicate items up front.  There's less bounce up there, especially if you're planning on pulling the trailer off road.

Reply:What ever your load, proper balance should have tongue weight of 8% to 12% of the gross for good stability (depending on the manufacturer or builder you ask).ThorsHammer suggestion of 45/55 probably will be about the same.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I like my trailers to have wheels and tires under them. Much easier to tow that way. Not nearly as many sparks flying off the back end going down the road either.Send the beer cart girl back by again. I think she's over dressed though.

Reply:I think I would cut the poles off of it and just make sure it can support what you want to hual.Maybe add a pipe rack on the top to carry short materials when needed.I think the main thing would be just making sure your investment (tools and such) are secure when your parked at whataburger for lunch.
Reply:so cut the poles that he put on there and add just some type of racking for metal, and the trailer will support everything that I want to be put on there.

Reply:Take out the camera and give us a good look under the unit, what is the rating on the axle? How about more info on what you will be carrying and what are you towing with? In general lots more info please. Reply:popcorn is rather good i have to admit that myself.Thor as far as my experience level goes to be honest its not that much just do it as a hobby for projects and to help friends and family out around their different pieces of land. The equipment that I have is generator/welder. grinders clamps stuff needed to get the job done. sorry not being a lot of help.I am able to provide a picture of the underside of the trailer however no rating or anything on the trailer so I am guessing homemade so as for as weight limit and all goes not sure on that to be honest.Sorry if not much help as far as information goes, if you need to know something I'll try to get back in a timely manner Attached Images
Reply:what is the outside diameter of the axle? what bolt pattern, what size are the bearings (parts numbers if you can find them) these are all ways to determine the weight limit of the axle without it being stamped/posted on the axle itself. What size/materials is the frame made of?what are the weights of the tools which you plan on keeping on the trailer? There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:What size are the tires?May seem stupid but if the tires are a "stock" size the weight ratings (size) will give you an idea.A 15" tire will give you around a 3,000 to 3,500 pound axle.  I am guessing you have less. All this said if you are going to keep this on your property.  (key word IF YOU ARE GOING TO KEEP THIS ON YOUR PROPERTY) the weight limits may not be so much of an issue.Take this with a grain of salt though.  A smaller section of land you will be low speed.  If you blow a tire your trailer won't flip you won't wreck etc....  On the road you would be plain stupid to pull something overloaded.I would not hesitate to use the tires off my 49 Ford for a trailer on my parents property.  (5 acers)  This truck quit running in 76 so you could imagine what the tires look like.  If I ever made such a trailer any kids would not be around it, and it would never leave the property.  (don't see it happening as both me and my dad have a 6x10 and 6x12, and I have a 8x20 so...)Last edited by kcb37; 03-23-2013 at 09:34 PM.
Reply:The trailer hubs and axle is from a Ford not sure which year or model but with that information I am assuming its a 3500 lbs axle. Also the equipment that I will be using is won't weight more than 1500 pounds. I am going to have the tanks near the tongue of the trailer, then the welder and generator and then the air compressorand kcb37 for the most part the trailer will be used on my acres (20 acres) but on occasion it will go on the road so I am not going to over load itLast edited by countryboy92; 03-23-2013 at 09:54 PM.
Reply:with a home built axle you can't guess weight rating. at this point, based on your experience level, and the fact that you do have intentions of taking this off your own property. I can no longer condone this project. and will no longer comment. and thank my lucky stars I don't live in texas. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:Are you sure the axle is off a Ford?Looks like a trailer axle to me.  No diff, even a solid front axle or rear axle generally is not straight, round, or tube like a trailer axle.  I would agree though.  Even if it only goes off your property once it needs to be done right.  It does seem that you lack some of the experiance to do this 100% safely.  Not trying to bad mouth you or anything we all have to learn. If it stays on your property and your not worried about having a real nice trailer get it rolling.  A flat a 10 mph isn't a big deal.  A tire that falls off while driving down the road....Originally Posted by countryboy92I am able to provide a picture of the underside of the trailer
Reply:The axle looks to be a trailer axle, I don't think it is Ford or any other motor vehicle. It appears to be heavily rusted but I don't think it's rotted beyond use, a good clean up is what it needs. However I would put new Ubolts on it, and the spring and hangers as well as the frame seem to be in worse shape. If you intend to do this right you are intending to do bearings and brakes and drums you are fast approaching if not exceeding the price of a brand new axle and by the time you throw in lights and the rest of the material and time to fix the deck, you could buy yourself a pretty good used trailer. Just my opinion. Should be able to get a decent trailer 4-600 bucks, parts for this will hit that if you do it right. Don't forget tires. good luck, keep us posted."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
