Here's a little project I did on the weekend, I do these from time to time for one customer. They come in random sizes and are usually one or two at a time.-I work out the cut sizes, cut out the raw material on the shear (16 gauge 304 s.s.).-Lightly tack them together, no penetration on intial tacks. Attached Images
Reply:-Tack them together-Tack end caps on the top and bottom to control distortion while welding and to allow for a decent purge.-Purge assy for 10 minutes at 15cfh- Finish tacking with tacks every 1/2"-Weld around the circumference, then weld the long seams. I use a fair amount of heat as I want to get fullpenetration on all the joints Attached Images
Reply:Looks great! If you don't mind me asking what were your settings, electrode and filler dia? I'm just starting to play with SS myself.Miller Dynasty 300 DXMiller CST280Miller Maxstar 150 STH
Reply:- Rough grind outer seams with a flap disc on an angle grinder- Remove discolouration and finish corners with a flap wheel- Scotchbrite for uniform surface-Hand rub outside with scotch brite to get a nice uniform grain.-Inside corners are ground smooth and discolouration is removed using scotchbrite. Reply:-Hand rub outside with scotch brite to get a nice uniform grain.-Inside corners are ground smooth using a pencil grinder with carbide burrs and various stones, discolouration is removed using scotchbrite by hand and on the dynafile. Attached Images
Reply:Hey SilveradoOn this I was using a 3/32" diameter 2% thoriarted tungsten ground to a fine point. I could also have used a 1/16" tungsten with the same results. I always work my foot pedal, by this I mean that I always set my amperage much higher than needed and watch the puddle to judge my heat, I set the machine to 120 amps for this weld. Realistically I would estimate that I was running between 40 and 60 amps.I used an 0.045" diameter wire on the circumferential weld (butt weld between two halves) and just fused (no filler wire) the long seams (corner joints) using a forward/pause/forward/pause motion. Regards

Reply:Very nice work! I did have to do a double take on pic. 3 in O.P. though.
Reply:Just curious... Any reason for making it in pieces instead of laying out the projection for the hopper and bending it, then bending the tube, and just having 2 corner welds instead of 8?You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:Nice job. I like your table. Awesome finish.
Reply:Thanks for the compliments. Anickode: That would be a good way of doing it, but I don't think the corner rads would look the same between the welded corners and bent corners on the finished product, at least not on my little hand brake. The person who was making these previous to myself was building them from 4 pcs and putting one bend in between the hopper section and the tube section. I liked that, but it wastes alot of material if cut out on the band saw and I did not want to send it out for plasma, laser or water jet cutting for such a low volume of parts. Good idea though, maybe once I have a better brake I can do it per your suggestion.
Reply:Well, You do very nice work! If you don't mind me asking. . What type of metal do you have on the table ?Thanks! Reply:well well well look who showed up...nice to see some of your work.  Maybe once I get a minute to come up for air I can post some shots of the work I've been up to.  I'm just finishing up my work stint here nearly 50 days straight. Cheers bud
Reply:Hey Welderbill, both tables are mild steel, these parts will go out for passivation and electropolish so I'm not too worried about any minor pick up of mild steel off of the table although I do try to limit it. If they weren't going out for electropolish and passivation I would lay down a sheet of stainless to work off of.CndMillwright: I would like to see more of your stuff posted, how are you doing? Once you are off the long shifts come by the shop so we can chat. You can show me some of your vertical up stick techniques.
