Well, after much deliberation and talking to a lot of satisfied owners, I have purchased a Riland TIG/MMA/Plasma Cutter combo unit...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ADME:B:EF:US:2I have really high hopes for this little unit. I have been wanting to learn TIG for a couple of years now and this should be good enough to learn on at least..plus, it's a 40 amp plasma cutter in the same unit. I was nervous about the whole Chinese thing, but I have talked to many many folks who are really satisfied with these Riland units...we shall see..
Reply:Good luck, I hope it works well for you. I started to buy one myself , but got talked out of it. Let us know! I 'm kinda planning on getting a Riland cut 40. I have heard some decent things about them lately too.
Reply:It worked the opposite way for me, I tried to talk myself out of it...even bid on quite a few used Miller Syncrowaves on eBay. I have talked with five different professional welders who have used Miller and Lincoln for years and told me they would put the Riland unit up against either in terms of performance...Like I said...we shall see
Reply:awwwww you get all the good stuffkeep us posted.....zap!(get a watercooled torch and a radiator)I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Just make sure to post your impressions. We want to see also.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I will give a full report once I receive the unit...Since I am new to plasma and tig, I will have a friend with more experience try the unit out and get his impressions...
Reply:I am more interested in the plasma part of it. I wany to buy one of their plasmas, I think the 40 amp model. Please, let us know. Thanks,Tony"Wherever you go....there you are"

Reply:That would be greatly appreciated. Combining a plasma unit and a welder is interesting from the electronics stand point, as such it will be interesting to hear how both sections work. Welders are low voltage high current devices and most plasma units I know about are higher voltage. As to the machine itself and its heritage don't worry about that. I see the vast majority of the inverter based machinery available as being grossly over priced. So if a little low price competition puts some stress on Lincoln and Miller I'm all for it. They either will have gotten the electronics right or not, you should find out pretty quick. When you do get back to us please report on the consumables for the torches. Are they of a standard size is what I'm interested in. It is these parts and local availability that bothers me.ThanksDave Originally Posted by bhaysI will give a full report once I receive the unit...Since I am new to plasma and tig, I will have a friend with more experience try the unit out and get his impressions...

Reply:Sparkee24 over on the Hobart board just got Giant Cut 40. Preliminary reports sound good. Seems the torch is a little cheezy but works fine. I think his biggest problem is his GF won't put it down and he's running out of sheetmetal.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:How thick of a metal would a unit like this cut through? the ebay listing said he cut through 3/4" but not pretty. What does that mean????
Reply:A friend at work bought a chineese combo unit. Today he is bringing over aluminum stipple plate to make fender skirts for his rv. He said he needed to use a real plasma and welder to get the project done!! I'll bet he will be putting his machine up on ebay if he can"t get a refund.
Reply:Hey, bhays, what's the word? Has your Riland unit arrived? What's it like?
Reply:It has arrived and looks great, I am impressed with the build quality. Unfortunately, I have not had time to do anything but unbox it due to work and a haunted house I am director of (it's crunch time in the haunted attraction world). I will post a full report just as soon as I get a chance.

Reply:Any updates, how does it work ?John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Still no updates? With TA pricing themselves out of the hobbiest market, I bet there's going to be more and more interest in machines like this...
Reply:I have debated on this machine and decided against it. Mostly because of lack of user and company input and output. I E-Mailed Riland about there product and got no reply on the questions I asked. Also I have a problem trying to buy a machine that mostly can only be bought on Ebay from (suggested retailers) and not by any of my local welding suppliers. Not even my non local suppliers. I will however say if this machine was as good as gold there would be people praising it on line and I don't see it anyplace, except for the people selling it on line. My opinion is and quoting sstorkel"With TA pricing themselves out of the hobbyist market, I bet there's going to be more and more interest in machines like this" I don't agree. I say people want a machine they can depend on and buy parts and consumables for. ?I don't personally see the Rialand becoming huge unless they get a name and maybe throw a few million machines into the playing field for people to use and comment on. ?If Riland would like a tester please PM me because I don't see anyone else saying anything good about there machines and thats from Googling and searching for many months. just my 2 Cents, I may be full of crap also. I will however stand by if you were sure of the machine as if it were a miller Lincoln of Hobart this post wouldn't exist. I also think Bhays would have jumped on here right away and posted how good it was immedietley if it were. i will stop now, it is possible ot is a very good machine. But I dont see it from the nonexistant reviews and lack of customer support.Last edited by drivesector; 09-16-2006 at 08:56 PM.Drivesector Hobart Handler 140Hobart Handler 180Ready Welder 2Hobart Air Force 400Airco Stinger 225Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most."OZZY"
Reply:i have never tryed the ryland but made a cover for a guy that got the ryland 200 and he said he liked it just fine. i opted to spend the extra $$ and go with the TA-185 no shortage of people praising them all over the net, after trying mine its no wonder they all love it, its a great unit for shoure and the service dose not seem to be too bad eather fron the few problems i have herd of. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:I too would like some feeback on the Riland. I'm a hobbiest and car guy, any welder would only get light use. Couldn't afford to drop 2-3 grand on a cutter and welder. Can't wait to hear.Thanksi can see if i can get the guy i made the cover for to pop in and give you a review. its not the plasma/tig combo he has the ryland 200 TIG only i think but i could be wrong, i'll ask him to pop in with a review or to e-mail me one i can post for ya.i would still be concerned about available parts and warentee work, but i supose at $300-$600 its expendable. just throw it away when it breaks right. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:BHAYS, Anything to say about the plasma/tig yet?
Reply:Still waiting for the evaluation of this unit. Pleaseget us updated. ThanksBeing "over the hill" is much better than being under it!
Reply:Must not be any good other wise a good review would of been posted..5 months old now...

Reply:Would you believe I haven't had a chance to try it out yet? I have too many hobbies. I direct a large pro haunted house, so that knocked out until a few weeks before thanksgiving, I do a large Christmas light display, so that knocked out until about two weeks ago with setup and tear down and I changed careers to go back to full time legal practice and that took care of the rest of any free time I might have had.I hope to actually get into the garage and play with the Riland this weekend.
Reply:from what little i have herd of them they seem to be ok units. witch one did you gat again ?? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:I bought the Super160http://www.rilandusa.com/#Riland_Sup...in-One_Machine
Reply:well it looks like its got every thing but a flow gage for argon ?? did one come with it or did you have to get it seperate ??i dont know about its clame to out perform all other brands. what was the sticker price you had to pay for it ??on a side note i did not like the looks of there mig , i would hate to have to use only 2# spools all the time. that would get expensive fast. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Anyone else with this unit? Doesn't look like bhays will ever use his. I figured at that low price other guys would have jumped on the bandwagon.Being "over the hill" is much better than being under it!
Reply:Fancy you should mention it, I have been using mine. I have found that it cuts just as well as a Miller unit at a friend's work and a Thermaldyne that another friend has. Probably a bit nicer.Tig seems just fine. I bought this unit to learn tig, so I am not a good judge on that side of the machine. However, I did have a friend (the one with the Thermaldyne plasma cutter) over who teaches tig in his shop class and he said it performed just as well to him as the Miller units they have at school. My sole complaint is that the compressed air for plasma cutting and argon for tig use the same port...sort of a hassle changing that back and forth.
Reply:I didnt take the time to read all the replys on this. But I too am curious about how this performs for you. I just picked up a hypertherm powermax 1000 for the shop. I think it really depends on the type shop you have, in a fab shop I wouldnt consider spending a couple grand on a unit being a waste of money at all, but for many a unit like this may be the answer, sweet price!Dan.Repair Specialties LLC |
